Sticking with Number Recognition Using Magnets and Interactive Games
Funded May 8, 2019The children were thrilled to have new materials to discover late in the last school year. There's something about being the first to use a freshly opened box or package! The materials were put into small learning areas, where children rotated through during the course of two weeks. They English Language Learners were given the magnetic numbers to match to a number line, helping them to understand the correct orientation of the numbers, as opposed to backwards or upside down. The magnets ensured cleanup was easy and pieces weren't lost on the floor. These are a wonderful addition to the classroom! Thank you!”

This classroom project was brought to life by General Motors and one other donor.Math Counts and So Do Pencil Grips!
Funded Oct 5, 2018Thank you so much for bringing this project to fruition! I wasn't sure many donors would be excited by funding simple items such as number lines and pencil grips but what an impact they have had!
The pencil grips were given immediately to those students who needed them. The slightly intrigued looks students gave when they were first handed a grip paled in comparison to the smiles on their faces when they began to use them. The grips correct the way a pencil is held and also makes extensive writing more comfortable. These particular grips are engineered to be used by both left and right hand writers. They fit standard pencils and stretch to fit the thicker pencils our kindergarten students use.
The large dry erase number lines seem to have had the most impact in grades one and two. Students often show movement forward and backward on module page number lines to mimic the addition and subtraction of numbers. They love being able to stand at the wall and demonstrate for their small group or the whole class their mastery of this skill. In small groups we often assign different color markers to each student so they can check each others work and discuss any issues they find.
Just know your donation has had a positive impact to many students in our building. Thank you so much for your generous support!”
