OBOB 21/22
Funded May 4, 2021Thank you so much for all your donations which helped us obtain multiple copies of the Oregon Battle of Books books for the 2018-2019 school year. A lot of our students come from low-income families and are unable to buy the books on their own. Therefore, they depend on their school library to be able to read the OBOB books in order to participate. This year, we had about 50 3-5 grade students participating in the OBOB tournament at our school. A team of fourth grade students won this year and went to the regional battle at the beginning of March. They are excited to start preparing for next year! Once again, thank you for contributing and helping our students have more access to books.”

Funded Nov 6, 2019Thank you so much for helping to fund this project! Over the past few years, some of the library headphones have gone missing which made it so that there wasn't a class set. This was problematic when an entire class was expected to use headphones to enhance learning. Thanks to all of your contributions for helping to get the headphone stash where it needs to be. Now all students have access to headphones in the library and can even check them out through our library system. The students really enjoy using them to listen to books online and to listen to music while working. Thanks so much!”

Books for Readers
Funded Jul 17, 2019Thank you so much for donating to this projected that allowed my school to have multiple copies of the Oregon Battle of the Books books. Many of my students are low income and do not have access to these books outside of our school. Additionally, most of the copies, if not all, are constantly checked out at the public libraries. My students love having the opportunity to participate in this reading tournament and having access to the books is very important for them to do so.
Because I am the school librarian, I am in charge of organizing the Oregon Battle of the Books tournament at my school. One of the things I try to do is help the students choose which books to read based on what they like and what would help their team. The students are able to check the books out and take them home to read and prepare for the battles. The battles consist of two teams being asked questions about the books. The team with the highest points at the end of the battle wins.
This year, I helped coached our school's winning teams to prepare them for the Regional Battle where they battled against other schools within Portland. The 6-8 grade team was able to go this year and though they didn't get very far, they had a great time. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19, the 3-5 grade team did not get to go to their Regional Battle this year, but I have encouraged them to sign up again next year so hopefully they will be able to go.
Thank you so much for helping my students have access to these books and bringing joy to their lives.”

We Need OBOB Books
Funded Jul 3, 2017We have just completed all of our OBOB Battles and will be sending two teams (one 3-5 grade team and one 6-8 grade team) to the Regional Battles on March 10th. The 3-5 grade team are the champs from last year, returning to the Regional Battle to represent Marysville. This is the first year Marysville is sending a 6-8 grade team to the Regional Battle and the team is VERY excited to compete.
Thank you so much for your help and donations. Being able to provide multiple copies of the books in our school library has helped the students prepare for the battles and the be introduced to new books and authors.”

Funded Feb 15, 2017The students absolutely LOVE the new headphones and head sets! They appreciate how comfortable they are with the nice padded ear pieces and how much better they fit on their heads. In addition, we now have enough headphones for each student to have a pair, unlike before when students would have to use all different kinds of headphones, some of which barely even worked. The students also like using the new headsets! It is so fun for them to use a microphone to help record narration when making videos. Thanks again for all of your help!”

MMS Reads!
Funded Jun 8, 2016With your help, our school received 5 sets of each book from the Oregon Battle of the Books list. Because we have these books, the 10 teams that have formed are able to read and prepare to battle. This is the first year our school is participating in the Oregon Battle of the Books and we are so excited to be able to do so. Our school is Title 1 with many low-income families, so having access to the books at school really help the students be able to get ready to battle.
Every week, students come into the library to check out these books. They have been at the top of the checkout list since the beginning of the school year. Having read all of the books, I love being able to recommend the books to different students so they can read one they will find really engaging. The students love telling me about the book they are reading and ask which one they should read next.
We are gearing up to start our battles soon. After school, we have hosted a few practice battles to get the students ready for the real thing. At these battles, students answer questions about the books and are awarded points. The team with the most points at the end of the battle wins. The winning team from our school will get to compete in the regional battle, and maybe even state! We are so appreciative of all your help!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Tucker
