  • "Sew" Creative!

    Funded Jul 22, 2016

My students were so excited to see a box with a new sewing machine on a table when they came into our classroom! After exclaiming about it--"Ooohhh it's a nice one!" and "I can't wait to use that!" they noticed the large package of felt--"Ooohhh! Is that what we get to use to make our felties?" and "I can't wait to do that project!"

Due to large class size this semester, we do not have enough sewing machines for each student so having another machine is a great asset to our department. Plus, it gave us an additional machine (for a total of 2!) on which we may do monogramming.

We so appreciate the donations that made this project a reality for us. My students are currently cutting out their felties and learning how to thread and use our new machine. I see great sewing ahead!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • Read to Ride

    Funded Apr 3, 2014

Thank you again for your generous donation and support of my project "Read to Ride."

In the short time that our new recumbent bicycle has been in my classroom, it has had a positive impact upon my students. They have commented that it is "so cool" to be able to exercise while they are reading and that this combination makes both activities more enjoyable.

My students have also suggested that I take advantage of the opportunity to exercise by riding the bicycle while I am presenting slide shows or lecturing!

As I said in my project, anything that encourages exercise and anything that makes students want to read is worthwhile, and this bicycle encourages students to do both!”

  • Walking Our Way To Fitness

    Funded Dec 31, 2013

Thank you so much for your generosity and support of our Donors Choose project. We are so excited for the addition of the treadmill to our classroom fitness equipment. My Nutrition and Wellness students were so pleased that people actually cared enough about them and their health and fitness levels to donate this to their school.

We will be taking turns using the treadmill during any free time we have in class and everyone will have the opportunity to use it during our "Fitness Fridays." I also have some students interested in using it during their lunch and study hall periods.

Many of my students have never had the opportunity to use a treadmill and this will boost both my teaching and their learning by giving them the chance to see what walking/running on a treadmill is actually like. Students in other classes are excited to see the new equipment too, and it has given me a recruitment tool--take Nutrition and Wellness and you can learn about using this equipment too. Actually, I will probably allow all my students to use the treadmill when there is available time. So once again, thank you so much for your generosity and support! We appreciate you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • Fit for Life

    Funded May 16, 2013

Once again, I would like to give a sincere thank you to all donors who gave in support of my Donors Choose project, Fit for Life. I appreciate your concern and caring for my students and their health. I can assure you that you have made an investment that will benefit many students. Use of the equipment bought with the project may actually give them the incentive to make lifestyle changes that will affect their health and well-being for many years to come.

When my students first saw the Full Body Sensor Scales, they just assumed they were for measuring weight and nothing else. When they learned all the information the scales could give them, they were excited and everyone wanted to know all their statistics. That led perfectly into lessons on appropriate weight, healthy body fat percentages, and BMI. When they first saw the Flex Tester Sit and Reach, they had no idea what it was. When they learned what it measured, they were eager to measure their flexibility levels. That led into our lessons on the importance of flexibility, and that being the strongest does not necessarily correlate to being the most fit.

We are using the equipment from the Fit for Life project primarily in our Nutrition and Wellness course. However I regularly have students from other classes, and even students who are not enrolled in my courses ask to use the equipment and I am glad for them to do so. I am using it as a recruitment for my program!

As you can tell, your donation has made an impact. Thank you again for donating, and for your support of my school, my community, and the health of my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • Sew it Seams!

    Funded Dec 19, 2012

Thank you so much Donors! Your generous donations have given my students access to technology and equipment that my school was not able to supply.

The Brother SE-400 Embroidery and Sewing Machine that you helped purchase for my class has been a big hit! Two of my classes were beginning sewing projects when our machine came in. Both of these classes were made up of students who had never sewn before. These students monogrammed their names or initials on the pockets of the bags they constructed. They were so pleased at what a professional looking touch their monogram gave their bag.

At the current time, students in my Clothing Management course are beginning projects. This class is made up of students who have at least a little sewing experience. They are so excited to use the new machine. They take turns using the "old" machines and the new Brother machine, and anxiously await their turn at using the new one.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

I teach Family and Consumer Sciences to students in a small rural community. You may know FACS as "Home Ec." The name change reflects the needs of our changing society. I do teach students to cook, but I also teach them about nutrition and wellness and how to select a healthy diet in today's fast food driven world. I do teach students to sew, but I also teach them to select clothing that meets their needs and gives the most value for their money. I also teach classes in Parenting, Housing, Human Relations, and Financial Planning. My classroom needs are as varied as my students and the courses I teach. I appreciate Donors Choose for giving me an option to share and fulfill my program's needs!
