  • Female Foodies

    Funded Dec 31, 2022

Thank you so much for helping our project "Female Foodies" get funded!

We were unfortunately unable to obtain the books originally listed in our project, but we were able to substitute several other books related to both food and the influence in the business of food, nutrition, cooking, and related occupations.

My students who are enrolled in foods related courses such as Food Safety & Nutrition and Life & Fitness Nutrition has enjoyed having the books on hand to learn more about foods, the business of food, and the history of food.

Again, we appreciate your generosity so much and thank you for giving us this opportunity to enrich our classroom learning!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • I Can Eat That???

    Funded Oct 21, 2022

When my students learn that 80% of the world's population consumes insects--either as an integral part of their diet or as an occasional treat, they are often skeptical--I mean--who would "eat bugs"????

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to broaden their horizons. Most students were excited to try the "crick-ettes"--although a few just couldn't bring themselves to do it.

We made smoothies with the insect protein powders and students agreed that there was no difference in that and any other added protein powder.

Many students are kinesthetic learners and it always makes more of an impact when students can see and do rather than just read and hear. This topic in particular needed a real-world example for students to really understand the value and worth of consuming insects--even though most of them still do not plan to make insects a part of their diet, the idea is not a foreign as it formerly was.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • Show Me the Money!

    Funded Apr 28, 2018

When you see posts about "why didn't they teach this in high school" on social media, there are always mentions of financial literacy.

Financial literacy IS taught in high school. Why don't students remember these lessons? Maybe it's because of the way the lessons are presented.

In this project, I was able to receive several different books that related to teen financial literacy that are eye-catching, simple to understand, and appeal to students.

Thank you for making this possible and for helping my students be responsible with their finances in the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • Let's Eat Bugs!!

    Funded Apr 3, 2018

This was an awesome project with a lasting impact on my students. They actually "ate bugs"!

Of course the bugs were flavored and processed, but just seeing the packaging and reading the ingredients and realizing that people throughout the world do actually consume -voluntarily- insects-was a real eye opener.

Surprisingly there were only a couple of students who refused to do the taste test of the insects. This is not something that will become a staple in any of my students' diets, but they can say that they have tried bugs!”

  • Let's Design a House!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you so much for funding our project, "Let's Design a House." I am a firm believer in hands-on learning and the materials we received with this project have enabled us to complete several activities.

My housing students designed their own stick houses using the craft sticks, putting them together with our new glue guns.

Students used card stock to design a tiny houses, decorating them with colored pencils.

These projects were fun extras that our regular funding did not allow us to purchase the supplies for.

But please don't think students were not learning while doing these activities! While working on them, we had the opportunity to talk about several topics--the elements and principles of design, floor plans, placement of windows and doors, roof styles--reinforcing the "book" learning of the course in a fun way! My kinesthetic learners benefited greatly from these projects!”

  • Equip Our Kitchens!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

It is hard to put in to words the impact this project has had on my students.

We live in a high poverty area, but we have been lucky enough to move into a beautiful new state of the art high school, with a wonderful Family and Consumer Sciences department. While our new kitchens are beautiful and have new appliances, our basic kitchen equipment was not replaced and what we had been using in our old high school was outdated and much used.

The new bakeware and kitchen equipment we received with this project gave my students a much needed lift and even more pride in our new school and department. Thank you so much for helping us equip our new school's kitchens!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

  • Stretching Our Possibilities

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

My Nutrition and Wellness students would like to express our appreciation to the donors who generously gave and enabled our classroom to receive yoga mats! We live in a high poverty area but were recently fortunate enough to move into a brand new high school. While our school is awesome, we have not had the money to purchase many "extras."

We participate in Fitness Fridays in this class and having yoga mats allows us to practice yoga and other floor fitness activities without having to bring towels or work out on our bare concrete floors.

My students were so excited to open the yoga mats and use them for the first time! We even practiced shavasana and a few students may have dozed off!

Again, thank you so much for giving my students this opportunity!”

  • Crossing the Country!

    Funded Jun 19, 2017

Cross Country is still a relatively new sport at our rural high school, and we are still discovering what is needed to help our athletes succeed. One thing many other schools had that we did not was a large tent to serve as a meeting place for our team between races and as a place runners could safely leave their belongings. Our runners are hard-working and enthusiastic and it was so wonderful to be able to reward them with a tent to use at XC meets. Our athletes now have a shady place to rest before and relax after their races. They are so appreciative and proud of this gift. Thank you so much for your support of our program!”

  • Food Rules!

    Funded Jul 6, 2017

I cannot express how wonderful it has been to have a classroom set of Michael Pollan's Food Rules to use in our nutrition related classes! We read a rule together each day and then students reflect on how they might apply that rule to their daily diet. We all feel as though our eating habits have improved as a result.

It has also been very beneficial to analyze our body fat percentages accurately with our fat loss monitor. Using the machine has enabled us to have a realistic view of our weight and fitness, as well as focus on areas of needed improvement.

Thank you again for helping us get these resources that are leading to a healthier student body one body at a time!”

    Mrs. Smith

  • Actively Learning!

    Funded Jun 6, 2017

We are ready to ride while "Actively Learning!" Our new Wirk/Ride pedal desk is a great addition to our classroom. Studies show that there is a direct relationship between physical activity and learning. Many students are kinesthetic learners and learn more effectively if movement is integrated into their classwork. Students may sit and pedal while reading or working on a laptop or iPad, which incorporates movement while still studying. Students who have difficulty staying on task when they are asked to sit still have an outlet for their energy. Thank you again for your support of our classroom--we appreciate it so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Smith

I teach Family and Consumer Sciences to students in a small rural community. You may know FACS as "Home Ec." The name change reflects the needs of our changing society. I do teach students to cook, but I also teach them about nutrition and wellness and how to select a healthy diet in today's fast food driven world. I do teach students to sew, but I also teach them to select clothing that meets their needs and gives the most value for their money. I also teach classes in Parenting, Housing, Human Relations, and Financial Planning. My classroom needs are as varied as my students and the courses I teach. I appreciate Donors Choose for giving me an option to share and fulfill my program's needs!
