  • Preschoolers Need Good Fine Motor Skills

    Funded Oct 9, 2015

My students have been enjoying our new supplies. When was the last time you heard a preschooler asking to write their letters during center time (free time)? The stylus we received they love to use. "I can write -- see!".

The children have been busy counting everything when they can count and "Feed the Bunny" with chopsticks. The fine motor skills and the counting skills. The children think they are planning but they are learning as well. They are also sorting objects and making patterns with some of the other center activities.

The new playground cart gives the children the sense of accomplishment. I load the cart in the morning and they take turns pushing to the yard. I love that they are able to take control of their world.

Thank you again for all these new materials.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schilling

  • Let Us Play!

    Funded Oct 7, 2014

My class is totally enjoying the books, iPads and learning games you have funded. There is a lot of playing and learning going on in this very busy classroom.

My students this year, though they are Speech Language Impaired, love to have books read. Their comprehension is getting so much better. I used to read 1 or 2 books per day. Now if I don't read at least 4, my class is complaining - "You no read today!" On most days you will see at least one student during free time looking at books and "reading" telling the story from pictures to themselves or another child. The language is incredible.

I use the iPads for early printing skills. A few students will "play" with iPads but refuse to do paper/pencil tasks. They are the same thing but presented differently. The center games give me diversity in learning materials. They are all counting and all sing the alphabet song. Many of them are picking out letters.

Thank you so much for donating to my project.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schilling

  • Preschoolers Learning to be 21st Century Leaders

    Funded Oct 18, 2013

Many times preschoolers are forgotten in grants. This grant is something my class can use for a long time. The iPads are used daily for fine motor skills and focusing on task.

My students will ask to use the iPad and/or laptop during center time (which is free time usually Legos or building blocks). They do not consider them learning tools. There is a great deal of learning and language going on at the same time. They are also learning to share and take turns.

Over the holiday break I plan to research more apps to teach articulation and language structures.

This is a great program and I am so grateful that my class was chosen for this project.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schilling

  • ABC's and Numbers Readiness Activities

    Funded Dec 30, 2011

Today our box arrived. My class and I are grateful for the donation. You probably heard the commotion in Walnut Creek. The children were so excited a box had arrived. Due to my preschoolers language disabilities, the box arrival was a language lesson. We taught questions forms (What is in the box? What do you think is in the box?), language structure (I think there is a toy in the box.), and vocabulary (What kind of toys? "trains, boxes, etc.) We counted the boxes and discussed the colors of the activity boxes within the carton. All this and they hadn't even seen the games and activities that were enclosed.

We opened a few activities. They were taking turns fishing for letters and naming them. We were sorting animals, fruits and colors. All of the activities are both language lessons as well as readiness skills that the children need to start kindergarten.

Thanks again for your generosity. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Schilling

I teach a Severe Disorders of Language/Aphasia preschool class in California. My classroom is on a regular elementary school campus K-6 with 5 Special Day Classes for children with disabilities. I am both a Speech Pathologist, as well as a general education classroom teacher. I currently have 16 three and four year olds in my class. Some of my students start school at 3 years old with little to no language but by the time they are kindergarten age they have age appropriate language and speech. Some of my other students have severe articulation disorders making them unintelligible even to their own parents.
