Our class is full of incredible, self-motivated readers. As a first year teacher, however, my personal classroom library is lacking. This is especially true when it comes to high-quality, multicultural literature. Multicultural literature has the potential to introduce children to a world other than their own and broaden their perspectives. My class would benefit from numerous texts that describe the lives and experiences of people other than themselves. Having access to these texts would help students to recognize different ways of life and be more empathetic toward others who may be different from ourselves. I have selected 45 titles from a variety of genres and authors who represent different cultures in a responsible way.
