Through various fundraisers, our club is able to provide each member with their own copy of every book we read. Students eagerly volunteer to work the concession stand during athletic events and read stories to younger students at our annual book fair because they love adding volumes to their personal libraries. Having their own copies of the novels means students can make notes in the margins as they read. But more importantly, it means students can re-read their copies at a later date or pass them on to other readers who will enjoy them, too. My students are eager to read the two titles I am asking for because they enjoy stories that feature multicultural characters while addressing themes of identity, race, social justice, and family. These are important themes all students should be reading about. Providing these books to will be the first step in spreading the word about these novels to others in our school. My book club students have a well-deserved reputation for knowing the latest good books, and once they start recommending these novels to their friend and classmates (and even their teachers), both titles are sure to become popular at our school, sparking lots of conversation and spreading a passion for reading.
