This year, I am working on creating a completely trauma-sensitive classroom for my students. Many of the children in our school live in poverty and/or have experienced trauma in their lives. By creating a trauma-sensitive classroom, all students can come to school and feel safe, comfortable, loved, important, and successful. The items in this project are all part of a TS classroom environment. The fidgets are available as an emotional-regulation tool. The flexible seating option (mats) allow students a flexible learning environment where they are most comfortable and able to learn. The rug will provide our class with a place to gather and hold our Morning Meeting and Closing Circle. This is key to building resilience from trauma and for developing social and emotional regulation skills. This will allow our students to spend time together, get to know one another, and become a family. This is a key part of our classroom! The seat sacks will help students with organizational skills. Many of our students do not have their own bedrooms, some don't even have their own beds. By giving each student their own seat sack, they can have a space that is truly their own while learning how to be clean and organized, which is sometimes a skill they do not learn at home.
