  • ScanNCut Technology for Students With Autism

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you to Ripple for fully funding this project on the #BestSchoolDay ever! We are so happy to have received these materials as part of their major funding of every project that was up on DonorsChoose. We have already put the supplies funded right to use in our classroom. The ScanNCut machine has been such an amazing addition to our classroom. It has increased productivity in our room which has made more time for us to plan quality instruction. This machine has already helped us cut out spring themed visuals which have supplemented the activities we are doing this month. Thank you so much for funding this project; it means the world to us!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marber

  • Smarty Symbols for Smarty Students With Autism

    Funded Jun 28, 2018

I continue to be amazed and grateful for everyone who cares so much about our class and the students in it. We are so excited to be able to use the Smarty Symbols program to create new and useful visual supports to make sure our students are learning in the best way possible. The possibilities of everything that can be made for our students are endless. We are now able to not only make visuals for the classroom, but we can now also make supports that can extend to the home for routines such as getting ready for school, bathtime, or bedtime. Thank you so much for supporting our class and helping us get Smarty Symbols!”

  • Healthy Snacks for Healthy Bodies: For Students With Autism

    Funded Aug 22, 2018

Unpacking all of the healthy snacks for my students this week really made me smile. It makes me so happy to know that all of my students will have access to nutritious snacks throughout the school year and that they will not have to worry about being hungry or thirsty when they are trying to learn. It is so important that basic needs of children are met before they are fully able to attend to lessons being taught in the classroom. Additionally, I know my students are now going to be introduced to new foods they have never tried before and hopefully expand their diet and foods they can eat, something that may be a bit difficult for many of our students. Thank you so much once again!”

  • Creating Adapted Books for Students With Autism

    Funded Apr 1, 2018

On behalf of myself, my partner teachers, and my students, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous gift to our classroom. We are so grateful that you thought of our students with your kind donation of materials that have helped us create adapted books for our class. The binding machine and coils that you helped bring to our classroom have already made a huge impact. We are now able to ensure that books we make are individualized for each of the learners in our room. Additionally, these adapted books are now sturdy enough to be used year after year. I can't wait to see the progress that my students made because of the addition of these books (thanks to you!).”

  • Books, Books, Books! For Students With Autism

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

I cannot begin to express the amount of gratitude I have for the donors who make "Books, Books, Books! For Students With Autism" come to fruition. We are so grateful that Ripple and local donors take a vested interest in the education and progress of our students. The books funded by this project have already been put to use and have started to have an impact on our students' learning. Our class has paired visual supports with each of the texts to support our students in answering questions and following along with the text. Each new book that we introduce gives us more practice at answering wh- questions and helps us to learn new vocabulary. Thank you once again!”

  • Adapted Art for Students With Autism

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you so much for helping this project get funded! Now our students have all the materials they need to access any type of art lesson we can think of! So far, the most helpful item has definitely been the dot markers. We have used them to collect data for our science fair experiment and to graph how many jelly beans of each color we found in a bag. Additionally, we have really enjoyed using the glue pens to adhere papers our projects. They have been so helpful because it allows our students to participate independently rather than requiring help. They have been amazing to help work on fine motor skills and pre-writing hand grips as well. Thank you once again to Ripple and one other donor for bringing this project to completion!”

  • A Bit Of This And That For Students With Autism

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

Thank you to Ripple for fully funding this project on the #BestSchoolDay ever! We are so happy to have received these materials as part of their major funding of every project that was up on DonorsChoose. We have already put all of these materials to use in our classroom. Every day we are using the date stamper to label our work and the loop scissors to cut things out. The weighted lap pad has been so helpful for some of our students to remain calm and regulate their bodies while learning. My personal favorite item has been the organizational materials such as the photo keepers which have begun to store student materials and the craft cabinet which is now holding all of our smaller items like thumbtacks and batteries. An organized classroom is a happy classroom! Thank you so much once again!”

  • OSMO Technology For Students With Autism

    Funded Mar 16, 2018

I continue to be incredibly grateful to all of you who helped this project come to life in our classroom. I would not have been able to access these materials for my students without your help. My students have already begun exploring all of the Osmo and Tiggly technology in conjunction with an iPad. These materials have provided amazing hands-on experiences combined with motivating technology. One of my students favorites has definitely been using the Osmo Numbers game in which he has to pop bubbles by adding up numbers to equal the number shown. Another big favorite has been the Osmo tangrams game which has helped some of our students work on matching to a sample and using their creative thinking skills. Thank you so much again for all of your support and making this possible for our students!”

  • Reading at Home: Engaging Families of Students With Autism

    Funded Mar 2, 2018

I am so appreciative to both Reach Out For Schools and our other generous donors who helped to fund this project. It means so much to me, my students, and my partner teachers that you took the time to read our request and took an interest in our students and their continued success. I know that the books funded by this project will create a huge impact when we go on home visits this summer. My students will have a chance to get back into reading before heading back to school in August, parents will be able to get back into a routine with their children, and my students will have stories which will prepare them to get back into the classroom. I showed my students some of the books when the packages arrived at school, and one of their favorite will be "Miss Bindergarten Has a Wild Day In Kindergarten" for sure! Thank you so much once again!”

  • Digital Storytelling for Students With Autism

    Funded Mar 3, 2018

I cannot begin to express enough gratitude to everyone who helped bring this project to life. Thank you to all the neighbors, kind strangers, and wonderful anonymous donors as well as AT&T for matching all donations. The important technology purchased from your donations have already been put to use in our classroom. So far, the items that have had the biggest impact have been the GoTalk communication devices and stands to go along with them. I have been hard at work customizing overlays which can be placed in the communication devices for different routines and books that we are reading in class. These devices have already had a huge impact on the participation of my students throughout the day and during literacy groups. They are using their voices more often and are now able to more accurately respond to questions and label items in our books. Thank you for helping them tell their stories!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marber

Our class has 8 amazing students with autism across 3 grades. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is self-contained, meaning the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction the general education setting and are able to interact & socialize with typically developing peers during the day. Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others. Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills & abilities fall across the range of the spectrum. Some students are near grade level academically and some are not yet communicating verbally. Each student is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, & support needs. All of our students need support in communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.
