  • Sensory Room for Students with Autism

    Funded Dec 28, 2018

Thank you so much for your donations which helped this project get funded. Our sensory room has transformed for the better already. One of the students' favorite items so far has to be the art fusion tiles. They love to squish the tiles and see the different colored liquids move around. One student in particular also loves the wooden panel bead maze and watching the beads move back and forth. I think that one of the most impactful items has been the light filters. They have created much more muted lighting in the room and the fluorescent lights are no longer as harsh for the students' eyes. Thank you so much for helping us make these big changes for our sensory room which has in turn helped our students improve their self-regulation, which has improved their focus during learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Marber

  • We Love Books! For Students With Autism

    Funded Sep 18, 2018

After unpacking all of the boxes, my students were so excited to see all of the great materials we received for our class. We are so appreciative of your generosity and support of our students and for making this possible. So far, a favorite amongst many of my students is "Lucas the Lion Loves The Tiny Talker". The story describes a lion who isn't able to roar on his own and so his is introduced by his mother to the "tiny talker", which is an AAC device that speaks words for him and helps get his wants and needs met. It is helpful for my students to see that others communicate in many different ways. It was also useful to introduce an AAC device through a story because it got them interested from the start! Additionally, "Llama Llama Time to Share" has been a great resource to be able to teach about why it is important to share classroom toys and materials with others. It teaches an important lesson that all of my students were able to learn from. So far, we have really enjoyed using all of the books and other materials in the classroom and we want to thank you once again for your donation!”

  • Sensory Sacks for Students With Autism

    Funded Nov 27, 2018

On behalf of my students, classroom team, and myself, we thank you so much for donating to our DonorsChoose project so that we could get sensory sacks for our students. Now, each of them has a dedicated set of sensory materials attached to the back of their chair for easy access. Now, whenever a student has a sensory need before, during, or after instruction, they know exactly where to go to meet that need without disrupting the rest of the class or getting out of their seat. The noise canceling headphones have definitely been the most appreciated item, especially for when we have fire drills! There have never been enough sets of headphones in our classroom to go around and now each student has their own set. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of all of my students!”

  • Stuck on You: Velcro for Students with Autism

    Funded Jan 7, 2019

Thank you so much for all of your kind donations to our project request. It means so much to my students and I that all of you thought of our class and helped to get this project funded. Velcro may not seem like an important item, but it definitely is for our classroom! We have already been able to use the velcro dots to use on picture icons for communication, pieces for adapted books, and visual supports for sensory regulation choice boards. We no longer have to be worried about whether we have the velcro to use on the important instructional materials we make. Now we have resources that we can use for years to come. Thank you once again!”

  • iPads for iMprovement Part 3: For Students With Autism

    Funded Sep 11, 2018

The new technology that you have brought to our classroom has already given our classroom team much insight into the behavioral and academic progress of our students. Having an iPad in our room dedicated to collecting important data on student behavior and academic performance has increased efficiency and cut down on the time it takes to analyze the data we have collected. This has already allowed us to be able to spend more time planning meaningful instruction and helped us make important informed decisions so that our students can learn at their best. Thank you for making our classroom a great place to learn!”

  • We Are Readers! For Students With Autism

    Funded Aug 30, 2018

Our class is so appreciative of all the people who donated to our project and helped bring it to life. Books are such an important part of early literacy and make a huge impact on our students' communication skills. They provide helpful visual supports especially when they are adapted and our students have already begun to enjoy them. Two of the books I am most excited to introduce to my students are "Why Do Leaves Change Color?" and "Mouse's First Fall". They are really going to supplement our thematic instruction for when summer changes to autumn. These books are going to be a great tie from the classroom to the real world and our students' environment outside of these four walls. Thank you once again for supporting our class and ensuring our students have the materials they need to succeed!”

  • Starting the Year Out Right: For Students With Autism

    Funded Aug 30, 2018

We are incredibly thankful that you helped our class start the year off right. The materials provided because of your generous donations have already had a great impact on our classroom. The rolling stool has allowed me to get up close to my students while we are in the front of the room and help them at their level. The laminator has allowed us to create reusable materials that are sure to last and support students year after year. The scrapbook cart has created a space for us to become more organized and lay out work for the week. The self-inking stamp has helped a student write their name when they have not been able to do so before. None of this would have been possible without you and your donations! Thank you so much on behalf of everyone who is in our room!”

  • Books and More! For Students With Autism

    Funded Jun 7, 2018

Thank you so much for taking time to read about our class and our project and getting it fully funded! My students have already had a great time exploring the magnets related to our current theme. We were able to review about what they did over the summer and finally had access to great hands-on materials that keep all students engaged and learning. I can't wait to see what they can do with the magnets and magnet board over the course of the school year. Thank you once again for caring about our students and making a difference in their educational progress.”

Our class has 8 amazing students with autism across 3 grades. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is self-contained, meaning the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction the general education setting and are able to interact & socialize with typically developing peers during the day. Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others. Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students' skills & abilities fall across the range of the spectrum. Some students are near grade level academically and some are not yet communicating verbally. Each student is unique and has their own strengths, gifts, & support needs. All of our students need support in communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.
