Just a seat or 32...
Funded Oct 6, 2011The first 8 stools have arrived and been unpacked. (Unfortunately, I could not post pictures of the unpacking, because of student privacy issues. But, imagine 4 boxes, approximately 5 ft x 2 ft. Then imagine 8 eager freshmen, working after school. There was much crawling in and out of boxes, after the unpacking was done.)
I'm waiting for my other stool grants to get funded before I deploy the stools. Right now, some students spend much of class negotiating for different chairs among our haphazard set, so I want to swoop in one day after school and swap the crummy chairs out for your wonderful stools. The entire room will change in one day.
Because we currently have 30 chairs and 32 students, I have deployed two of the new stools. Let me be honest--the students HATE the new stools. They can't spin, they can't slouch, they can't tip back. Students avoid the new stools like they are electrified. And this reaction makes me so happy. When I have a full set, with no other seating options, there will be one less thing to distract the students from learning.
Thank you for this initial step in making our classroom functional. I wish you could join me on launch day for the full set of stools.”

Funded Oct 6, 2011My students have been working on "element posters" all this week, each one doing their best creative work to represent a particular element from the periodic table. What a luxury it was for me to go to my supply room and bring out pens, scissors, colored paper--all thanks to your generosity. Students used colored note cards to write their own test questions, and then grabbed calculators from my big box to use on that same test. The students take all this for granted, but I am aware at each of these moments that our class would not be flowing so smoothly without your generous donations.
Thank you, again and again, for being a part of the daily rhythm and life in our freshmen physical science class. I honestly could not be teaching without your gifts.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Povey
