The majority of the books in our library are thirty years old. Some of them are so worn down that students can't even see the title on the spine or the cover art. They need new, engaging books that are relevant to their lives and will get them excited about reading. Graphic novels are all the rage and the most sought after items in our library. We cannot keep them on the shelves. Students often have to wait for several months before the graphic novel they want to read becomes available. Graphic novels are perfect for both struggling and advanced readers. Struggling readers get excited about books because graphic novels aren't text heavy; however, they do require students to make meaning using visual clues. This skill is important for 21st century students.
