My students are bright, dedicated and focused on learning. My students want to go to college. Most of them come from homes where they would be the first in their families to do so. Their home lives are filled with love despite the fact that they are considered low-income. I tell my students that purchasing a graphing calculator would be an important tool for our mathematics class, but they can't afford it. A scientific calculator just won't cut it. My students need to see the beauty of functions quickly and efficiently. The graphing calculator is a tool that supports their understanding of concepts and allows for deeper levels of discussion. In addition, they are allowed to use the graphing calculators on standardized tests. While the tests state that a graphing calculator is not necessary, it certainly gives students an edge. Students from more affluent families could easily afford to purchase their own. Mine cannot. However, my intelligent and motivated students deserve that edge. My school cannot supply them - our budget is stretched to the max. I cannot afford to purchase one for every student. Please help my students use the graphing calculator as a tool that springboards them to a brighter future.
