My school is located in the beautiful, rural California Central Valley. When I surveyed my class many had never seen snow nor the beach. Being centrally located, we are almost an island. Economically, my area has been dramatically affected by high unemployment. Currently, I have 35 students and 2 mainstream students from the Special Day Class.
Being a new teacher, I have limited supplies. My school is wonderful, but they only provide basic supplies and cannot afford luxuries like paint or brushes.
Last year, I borrowed painting supplies from another teacher and I was amazed that all students were actively engaged and expressive. It even allowed my mainstream students the opportunity to integrate more with the general education students.
I am hoping these watercolors become an important tool to integrate social studies and art. Since most of my students have never left the area, I am hoping to bring California history and geography to them through art.
