Scissors and Permanent Markers
Funded Jun 28, 2023So far, your kind donation has enabled our Pueblo art students create two different projects. For one of the projects, students created accordion fold collage books that they wrote a phrase on top of. The second projects were small sculptures in felt or paper.
The addition of small, sharp scissors made it possible to make small detail cuts on felt, newspaper, magazines and other papers. Permanent markers can write on top of most anything so most students ended up using those to help make their phrases stand out.”

Drawing Pencils and Glue!
Funded Oct 11, 2023Pueblo High Art Students had a blast using such high quality drawing pencils. Everyone was assigned 2-4 pencils each and all took such good care of their materials. It really makes a difference for them when there is enough from them to have their own.
The assignment they worked on was a photo realistic self-portrait value drawing using a grid method for laying out the proportions. First they had to take silly selfies to use as reference photos. After we printed those out they learned how scale the d=grid fro the drawing 2x larger than the photograph.”

Funded Sep 11, 2023We are so grateful your donations made it possible for every student in art to make one or two soft sculpture dolls. They all learned how to thread a needle, stitch, use special fabric scissors and fancy glue.
I hope you enjoy viewing their dolls as much as I do. I love this lesson because students are always 100% engaged throughout the whole process. They always have to make a design and color it in before they get to collect their materials. They bring their plan up to the materials table just like they would bring to a fabric shop.
Thanks again,”

Funded Jul 17, 2023Your generous donation helped Pueblo Beginning Art students create contour lines in their facial proportions practice drawings that are in high contrast to the white of the paper and bold looking. Students were able to apply watercolor to their drawings without running the ink.
They love using permanent markers. Any assignment using permanent markers is a winning assignment with our classes.
The markers and pens will be used for several other assignments coming up in the future.
Thank you so much!”

Funded Apr 5, 2023Thank you from the the bottom of my heart for donating to our classroom. Students totally loved making ugly dolls. Permission to make something ugly was a hit! Everyone was engaged and most kiddos made more than two dolls! They learned how to stitch and some learned several stitch techniques!
As you can see in the photos, the dolls were created with a variety of body parts and colors and textures. I have been so impressed by their creativity and risk taking.
This will be a repeat project for years to come.”

Time to Replenish Classroom Supplies!
Funded Nov 25, 2022Thanks for donating to our classroom. We always need to replenish in order to keep creating! Without you, we wouldn't get such nice things.
Students love to paint, color, watercolor and draw. Materials for fee-choice activities are available now that we got to replenish. I will be leaving Valencia at the end of the year to work at a neighboring High School and the next teacher to come to my room will have something to start with thanks to you. That is so much more than I had when I came here 5 years ago, so thank you.”

Scratch Art Animals
Funded Nov 29, 2022Thanks to your generosity my students have learned how to use a chalk transfer method getting their images onto scratchboard. They followed that with scratching away the ink using a wooden and metal scratch tool to reveal the various values and textures ( white clay layer is below black ink).
As a result they are far more confident in their art abilities and want to bring their work home to show off to their families!
It is wonderful to witness a student go from feeling unsure of themselves to confident and feeling a sense of belonging just by getting them the right project!
Thank you so much!”

Funded Aug 31, 2022Thank you for supplying us with materials for our art room! The paints we purchased are being used to develop altered books every Friday. Initially, our goal was to be done with our book project by December but students are so engaged that we will continue working on the altered books ( El Libro Project) on Fridays through the end of the year.
Everyone was drooling over the new paint bottles and asking to help prepare the materials station. The faster that station gets prepared the sooner they can start painting.”

Tim Burton Inspired Selfies
Funded Aug 24, 2022Thank you so much for donating to our classroom. You made it possible for everyone to create charcoal drawings. Students created Tim Burton inspired self-portraits after learning about his work.
Everyone was so excited to realize they could all use their own kneaded erasers and blending sticks. These are not tools they have at home. Also, kids were really into using charcoal and chalk I think, in part, because they could get their hands dirty.
We'll be using the remaining charcoal in future mixed media projects, the erasers for a graphite value study and the blending stumps again next year when we tackle another charcoal value project.”

Funded Apr 8, 2022Our classroom has really come alive since this grant was funded by you. Students have been learning how to work with acrylic and watercolor paints in a variety of ways. They they can establish a background in one medium an add layers of a mixture of other materials to create depth and add interest on their pages. They have been learning about color theory and how to create a mood, texture and gradients within their altered books.
When they saw the bright paint colors they gravitated towards using them and were motivated to learn how to responsibly handle all materials. They always look forward to working on their altered books as it gives them a chance to stretch and explore numerous materials and ideas.
Next steps are to learn how to create deep space in an artwork using watercolor techniques on watercolor papers, acrylic painting techniques on prepared paper, and pen and ink drawing techniques on top of both. The theme of the next series of works will be to create art about the things they love most about their community.”
