Flexible, comfortable seating is proven to help students stay engaged and focused during instruction. Right now, students can choose where they sit each morning and are free to work on the floor during independent work times. Because there are no tables available for me to use in my classroom, I have combined groups of desks and turned them backwards instead. Many are of differing heights and because they are desks, they have all four legs which hinders cooperative learning and movement, not to mention the plastic chairs are less than appealing, particularly when asked to sit in them for an entire school day. Research and observation supports that making sure students are comfortable is an essential part in motivating them. Since taking "assigned seats" out of my classroom, I have seen a boost in student's attitudes towards school and have improved their communication and collaboration skills.
It is my hope that with these additions to my classroom, students will be even more engaged because they will be comfortable and able to move more freely. The materials will also be utilized in the B3 program that is proven to improve student strength, balance, and behavior. With video games, iPhones, and tablets over stimulating our children and thereby hindering brain development, it is my hope to use my students' time at school to combat this deterioration by replacing it with curiosity, engagement, and healthy peer interaction. Thank you for supporting my class and giving them the opportunity to experience a new, exciting way of learning!
