The school library is partnering with our Pre-K to 2nd grade teachers to distribute books for students to keep. While each student visits the library on a regular basis, our families are often without quality children's books for home libraries. By the end of the year, with funding from several sources, our Pre-K - 2nd grade students will have 10 books to begin building a collection of books to call their very own. These books will be self-selected by the students from groups of carefully chosen titles that are age and developmentally appropriate, in both Spanish and English. Your donation will help our youngest students develop a passion for reading, improve literacy skills and build a culture of appreciation for books. Data has proven that "88 percent of students who were poor readers in first grade were poor readers in fourth grade" (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development [NICHD], 2000, 9). This study proves that this program is needed and will benefit those students at risk for life-long reading struggles. Please help us continue the Build a Better Home Library program, allowing our students to be enriched with reading at home. The expression of "I can keep it?" makes each donation valued and appreciated.
