  • Good Hygiene!

    Funded Nov 27, 2017

We finally started the unit on Health and Nutrition in Science. I was so excited to finally get to this unit because I knew how excited the students would be when they got to see the materials we got from our supporters. I was right!! The students were so much more engaged knowing that they had materials to actually practice what we were learning about. Some students mentioned that they never used deodorant or dental floss because their families didn't use it. Some students said their parents thought it was too expensive to purchase. Every student got something they needed, whether it was a toothbrush, a comb, dental floss or deodorant. Many students thought it was easy to floss and unnecessary. The students were actually able to practice flossing on their own teeth and they learned that it wasn't as easy as they thought! They were most surprised about the amount of food that got stuck in between their teeth. This was a huge success in helping to teach students how to properly take care of their hygiene! Thank you so much for your generous support!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Yip

  • Take Home Snacks!

    Funded Nov 16, 2017

The students were so excited when they saw the delivery of snacks. They couldn't believe that all these snacks were for THEM! We started a classroom pantry and I explained how we were going to use it. I explained that sometimes when you need a little snack or energy boost, they would be able to go into the classroom pantry to grab a healthy snack. We discussed the difference between sugary and healthy snacks, and why it is so important to make healthy decisions. The students then discussed different ways we could keep up the pantry. The class chose students to maintain the pantry. They decided it was going to be a revolving classroom job so that everybody would get a chance to do the job. They even came up with a way on how they can keep the pantry going by asking parents who are willing to donate snacks to our classroom pantry. Through this project, students are learning independence, responsibility, decision making and the importance of making healthy food choices. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity to grow and develop!”

  • Good Hygiene and Healthy Habits!

    Funded Mar 9, 2017

The students were so excited to see the materials that they were going to get. Once student said, I could finally have my own deodorant!! (Apparently, she had to share one with her sister.)

In our Health and Hygiene unit, we talked about how to properly brush your teeth and use dental floss. Some of the kids said they never used dental floss before. Some others complained they have used the same toothbrush for a year! With the help of our donors that can now change. Students can get used to using dental floss with their own supply. Each of the students got a toothpaste, a toothbrush and dental floss or mouthwash, if they needed it. When it came to deodorant, some students were embarrassed about not using it or having any. The kids were excited about having their own and couldn't wait to use it. One students shared about how amazing they will smell from now on!

My next steps are to continue with trying my best to supply what I can to meet the students needs as best as I can.

Thank you so much for helping us make our learning more fun. Actions speak louder than words. Now instead of telling them to brush their teeth, I can actually say- Do it because I know you have the materials.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Yip

  • Science Rewards

    Funded Mar 9, 2017

I showed the class our new prizes. They were so excited and couldn't wait for when they were able to choose one. You really could tell how excited they are with the big smiles on their faces.

I introduced our new incentive system to our classes. Each student can get a prize once they earn 3 checks. They can earn checks for participating, helping a friend or just for following classroom rules. Once they get 3 checks then they can go to the prize box and choose a prize. After choosing a prize, they have to explain how their prize connects to a Science idea. One student chose the pencil that changes color. They explained that the heat from our hands creates a chemical reaction and that's why the pencil changes color. I am so happy to see how motivated they are!!

I plan to continue with our incentive system. We haven't started it too long but it seems to be really working. All this success couldn't have happened with out the help of our generous donors! Thank you so much for making a world of a difference!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Yip

  • Healthy Snacks

    Funded Dec 16, 2016

Thank you so much for your generous donation! One of my goals is teaching my students how to make healthy choices everyday. I want this to be a skill that they can use everyday and forever. Thanks to your generous donation, I was able to accomplish this goal. We worked in partners to look at the nutritional facts on the packages and recorded them down on our papers. Then we compared the calories and the amount of sugar in each of the snacks. We were surprised to find out how much sugar some of the snacks had even though the packages were small. We even discussed how some of the snacks looked like they were really healthy but it wasn't. We learned a lot.

The students were so excited when the boxes of snacks arrived. They couldn't wait to get started. It really helps to have the students excited about their work because they focus on it so much more. The best part was they got to eat the snacks after they finished their work!!

Our next step is to create healthy meals using the food pyramid. Hopefully, the more they learn, the better their choices will be!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Yip

My students are diverse. They come from many different backgrounds. Our neighborhood has many new immigrants and our students vary from regular education kids to mainstream kids as well as 12:1 kids. Our schools motto is "Committed to Excellence." We strive to give our students the best resources we can. Many of them need hands-on materials and manipulatives so that they can "see" what is happening. Most days we break up into small groups to do mini lessons to review or strengthen concepts. Our goal is to try our best to help the kids meet their goals and succeed!
