Each day my students take their seats and are ready to learn. Although taking a seat may sound easy to some, for some of my students, sitting can be a dreaded task. Adaptive and flexible seating allows students to take ownership of their learning experience and make the choices that are most comfortable for them. Currently my students do not have many options for seating. During independent work time, my students choose to work in a variety of locations in my classroom such as: sitting under tables with clip boards, laying on the floor with a clip board, or at different table stations. Ensuring that each student is comfortable in their environment is an essential component in motivating them to learn. Many of my students find chairs to be uncomfortable and prefer to sit on the floor. Due to my student's individual needs, many of them have trouble focusing because of the sensory needs they may have. By giving students with special needs the opportunity to choose their seating, research states that positive behavior, student engagement, and overall learning increase. My goal is to allow my students to pick their seating in order to decrease sensory overload. Bouncy bands, wobble chairs, and ball seating will enhance and enrich our learning environment in a variety of ways. Research shows that some benefits include: choice, comfort, physical health, collaboration, communication, enhanced learning, movement, and fun.
