My students are Kindergarten/English Language Learners (K/ELL) who come from about ten different ethnic backgrounds. They come to our public school from throughout our district (third largest in Minnesota), specifically to attend this K/ELL program their first year. I teach two different sections of K/ELL with an average of 25 students in each section. Many are new to the country; most have had little or no exposure to the English language in their households--be it from other family members, books, or the media. Most come from underprivileged socio-economic backgrounds and can't afford books. Typical students enter my class unable to speak any English whatsoever, hence the need to emphasize audio tools with rhyme and repetition. They may start the year quiet and apprehensive, but by exposing them to stories and songs, they are very engaged and soon LOVE school and learning! Our objective is for these students to join mainstream first grade classes one year later.
