  • Reading for Comprehension, Language Enrichment and STEM - All in One!

    Funded Jan 25, 2022

The books that were bought for the class, created an environment of excitement in my students' learning. We read Benjamin Franklin together, in small groups, in partners and individually. We answered questions, created summaries, drew settings and events from the book, the way students visualized them. Students were actively learning with a novel.

The students chose an invention that exist today, research it and created a virtual book. The book contained all parts of a book. They reviewed the parts of the books and created all those parts into their books as well.

Students have been doing much more virtual learning due to COVID and these books allowed them to hold and touch what they were all reading. This allowed for students to regain some personal contact with their classmates and practice team working skills as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Montano

  • Capturing Learning in a Digital World

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

The idea of having the students use a camera and a printer to demonstrate their projects and work to others, including their parents was just that, an idea! This idea exploded into many directions. The camera and printer has been used in many activities and the joy that it has brought to my student's is very rewarding.

"A Camera!" and "I can use it?", these were some whispers that were heard around the class when I introduced the first assignment to them. They were in disbelief that an adult was going to trust them with such a fancy looking equipment. With phones in our back pocket we forget that cameras still exist and for my students to be able to use this equipment in class today is amazing!

The students took pictures of each other and some of the projects they worked on to put into their portfolios. One student researched and created a book about the Camera's history. The students have been very careful and responsible when using the equipment, fostering their responsibility skills. Taking turns and taking each others pictures has helped them strengthen their team work effort. It has brought motivation and excitement to lessons that the kids are doing and know they will capture their leaning in pictures.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Montano

  • Power of Reading a Book!

    Funded Feb 14, 2020

I feel like I won the lottery!!! I invest in my classroom every year and really feel shy about asking for donations. I started the process about three years ago, but felt that I wanted to wait to ask for something really necessary for the class. I constantly hear about digital resources online for students, but that is very hard when technology is not available. Technology wears out and is expensive. Books is my solution and I will ensure that my students will have that experience and memories of holding tangible reading materials to last their lifetime. I am so grateful for your donation and will ensure that we take full advantage of this gift from all of you. Thank you for investing in our future leaders!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Montano

The skills acquired from reading a book is a life skill that enhances the learning of every student. Through mentor texts students gain knowledge and are able to see the patterns of writing through the author's texts. I will be teaching grammar through a program that requires mentor texts. Grammar has been taught by having students look for the mistakes in sentences or stories given to them to correct. The program, "Patterns of Power" teaches the students to look for the patterns authors use and these texts serve as models to the students to mimic. The individual books listed would be used for this purpose. My school is an IB school and a planner that is taught in class is about the evolution of tools and how tools change our world. The class set of,"Quien fue Steve Jobs?" will be used to be read in class where reading skills will be embedded and knowledge gained on a person who made an impact on our world with his inventions he provided our world. I teach the class both Spanish and English and provide opportunities to keep up both languages. This planner is taught during black history and the class set of , "Who was George Washington Carver?" would provide the students practice with the English language and learn about another great inventor that would be tied in with black history month. This series of books have been proven to be liked and welcomed by my students. They love reading about people and I would like to continue to motivate them to read books. Giving them to read something they like makes it so much more easier to teach and continue to motivate them.
