Kindergarten is becoming more rigorous, but I still like to do at least one craft activity a week with my class. This keeps the fun in learning and allows the students to express their creativity. The craft usually has something to do with one of our weekly books or what we are learning about in science. This year we made hermit crabs to go with the story House for a Hermit Crab by Eric Carle, and we also made the life cycle of a butterfly using paper plates, tissue paper, pom poms, construction paper, and pipe cleaners. My students then wrote the steps in the life cycle on writing paper. Some students come to school without knowing how to color or cut; these materials are needed to give them the chance to learn how to do these skills and it also helps them build fine motor skills. Cutting, coloring, and creativity are important life skills that need to be taught! The scissors, construction paper, wiggly eyes, paint holders, paint trays, pom poms, and aprons will all be used for crafts. Our goal is to use these crafts supplies weekly to help build the students’ fine motor skills. Painting and cutting are great ways to build these skills. The aprons will be used to keep the students from getting paint on their clothes. The paint trays and the no-spill paint cups will hold our paint. We will use the construction paper to paint on, and sometimes we will cut out our painting.
