Research strongly supports creating student-centered classrooms to improve the educational outcomes of today's students for careers in the dynamic, fast-paced, ever changing world they will inherit as adults. My classroom instructional practices and physical environment must change in order to encourage creative-thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication - all necessary in developing a successful 21st century workforce. Flexible seating, when effectively implemented, allows students a degree of choice and control over their learning environment and mirrors the flexible environment increasingly seen in today's workplace. The flexible seating materials I am requesting with this project will support my goal of creating a student-centered classroom. I am planning to remove many of the desks to create flexible work spaces - on the floor, around the room, around tables, to enable students to work in partnerships, within triads, or with a small group. With this classroom structure, students will have choice, increased opportunities for collaboration as they utilize knowledge to solve problems, answer complex problems, and develop projects.
