As first grade students, we use every inch of our classroom space as we learn. We rotate to many different spaces daily to work on centers in reading, writing, and math. Our bodies are too little and wiggly to stay seated at a desk all day, so we need alternative options for seating in our classroom, as we move to new spaces to learn. Right now, all we have are hard, plastic chairs at our desks and center spaces, which makes staying focused difficult. There is research to support alternative seating options allow students the ability to move just enough to enhance learning. When we are comfortable, we decrease the amount of off-task behaviors, and we can focus much better on learning and completing fun classroom activities. Colorful stools, soft floor cushions, pillows, and a couch will greatly improve our classroom space, and allow for more focused learning to take place during center rotations.
