Many students have valid reasons for not completing homework, from not knowing where they are going to sleep each night, to babysitting siblings while parents work. Some students need help. Others are so busy, they forget to do an assignment. The problem is that many of our students decide to take the easy route and "take a zero" rather than make arrangements to get the work done. Our teachers looked at grades from the fall and discovered that most of the failures were not due to lack of ability, but because of chronic missing assignments. Our team of sixth grade teachers donates our lunch time to monitor a "working lunch" study hall where students bring their lunches and get the work done. Teachers accept late assignments for full credit if students attend ZAP. In the first two weeks of the program, the daily average was 50 students from all content areas. Many students are volunteering to go, while others are assigned. The message of Zeros Aren't Permitted is getting across.
