Putting It All Together with Biology Dissection!!
Funded May 9, 2018Thank you so much for your help and support in funding this project. My students gain so much knowledge and insight from dissection and I am so grateful that you have provided them with this worthwhile opportunity. As we are in the middle of Teacher Appreciation week, I am so honored and feel so appreciated! Thank you again!”

Funded Nov 10, 2015Thank you again for all of your support!
Thank you all so much for your contribution to our biology class. We have had such a great week as a result of the lab materials that were purchased through Donors Choose!
This crime scene lab allows students to work with evidence and DNA samples to identify a "murderer". While the students are having fun collecting and analyzing their blood, hair and DNA samples, they are also learning the real world application to their study of biology.
Without generous donations from you, this activity would be impossible.”

Funded Feb 29, 2016Thank you all for your donation to our project. I am so lucky!
We are currently completing our pig dissection in my honors biology class and I consistently see the same awe and interest from the students. They are always a bit freaked out, but then they get so interested when they see how the body systems we've been studying are literally connected to one another. I hear things like, "I always thought my kidneys were in the front!" or "I didn't know that the gall bladder was actually connected to the liver." or "That doesn't look like the diagram at all!" There is so much learning and connection happening these days in my classroom. When I hear about health and/or human body issues in the news, I am surprised by how often my brain thinks about the pig dissection as a frame of reference for my own body. I hope that my students are getting this type of insight too.
Thanks again for allowing this to happen in my classroom.”

Can Sports and Reading Teach Kids About Biology?!
Funded Mar 18, 2015Thank you so much for your donation to my project. I was so excited to receive this class set of books! My biology students have gotten really into reading these books. Epstein connects much of the science we've learned to sports with fascinating data and anecdotes. When my students share out, it is clear that they are making personal connections to the book and to science through their own experiences with sports.
We read from these books everyday for 10-15 minutes and it provides an engaging way to start each class period.
I am so glad that my students are able to see how science can relate the "real world".
Thank you again for your generous donation!”

Putting It All Together with Biology Dissection!
Funded Oct 16, 2014Thank you all so very much for your support. I can't tell you how appreciative I am! My students love this activity and I they always get so much out of it. I had my first day of class for our second semester, and when I asked the kids what they were the most excited about, they said DISSECTION! It puts all of the things that we have been learning into perspective. The kids say things like they never knew what a heart or lungs looked like! So many kids have a greater appreciation for their own bodies through this experience and it instills an interest in science and medical careers. This truly hands on, and student driven activity allows students to really make connections and get interested in science and I had the best grades on their pig practical exam that I have ever had!
Thanks again for your continued support! You are the ones who have made this possible.”

Biology Dissection For All!
Funded Jun 29, 2013Thank you donors for your support of my biology project. We have been doing pig dissection in my classes for almost five years and I have found this to be truly one of the most important labs that we do. Students of all levels and interests find this experience to be relevant because there are so many direct links to their own physiology. These pigs were chosen due to their similarity to humans, and kids are able to make connections between the animals and themselves. This lab lays the foundation for students living in a society where scientific literacy is critical for empowering citizens to make important choices about their bodies. Thank you so much for making this possible for me and my classroom.”

Funded Apr 3, 2012Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom. I now have a set of micro-pipettors that I can use in my classroom to do advanced high tech labs with my students. We have used this equipment to learn pipetting techniques which are essential to building a solid foundation in biotechnology. We have run samples of student's DNA on a gel to determine a component of each student's non-coding genome and these pipettors will also be essential in our bacterial transformation lab we add jellyfish DNA to bacteria to make them glow! I am truly grateful for your generous support and my students are so lucky to have the benefit of these experiences in their high school biology curriculum. Thanks again!”

Scientific Literacy...Bill Bryson Style
Funded Nov 18, 2011Thank you so much for your contributions to my project. My students are currently reading this fabulous book and are really enjoying it! We spend the first 15 minutes of class reading (even I get a chance to read the book again!) and you could hear a pin drop...they are really engaged. The students are exposed to science in a totally new way: through the stories of people who actually DID it.
In the past the students had to buy their own books in order to participate. This meant that we couldn't start reading until everybody had the book, which often was weeks into the term. It also meant that I often had to buy extra copies with money out of my own pocket. Now, we have a class set starting on day one and my current students as well as my future students will have a chance to actually finish the book.
I am so grateful for your donations and feel so lucky to be able to have my class read this interesting, engaging and inspiring book about science.”
