  • How Are You Feeling? Playing and Learning About Emotions

    Funded Apr 3, 2023

My students loved the new materials we received due to your kind donations. Many of my students have a difficult time identifying their feelings and self regulating. With the puppet stage, we were able to use the feelings puppets to act out different feelings. They also had the puppets perform to one of our favorite youtube songs by Mooseclumps, called Feelings. The kids loved the puppet stage and are engaged while playing with it.

One of the best items I received was Pawz the Calming pup. One of my students gets angry quickly and had trouble calming down. Now when he starts to get angry, or is angry, he goes to get the calming pup to help him with his calm breathing. This is amazing for this little 4 year old preschool student, and he is so proud of himself and hisself regulation.

In the near future, I will be doing a mini unit about social emotional learning, using the toys, books, and materials that this project provided for my classroom. Thank yo for making this possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Walden

  • Feelings and Flexibility

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

I want to take this to thank each of you for contributing to my project. My Preschool, Kindergarten, First, and Second graders were so excited to see each package arrive. I use the pressure and weighted vests daily. I have seen a positive change in the student that utilizes the pressure vest. It helps him remain more calm through-out the afternoon!

The tent has been tricky for the preschoolers to understand. They want to get in and play, and often do not leave the student alone that needs time to get away and wind down. This understanding will hopefully grow as the year progresses.

I have a little area set up for students to go to that includes the tent, mirror, and bean bag chair. This area is for them to calm down and (with help from an adult) sort out their fillings. There will be a picture of this corner posted. This is one of my favorite areas in my classroom.

At the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year approached, I found out that my role was going to change just a little. Last year I was a resource and developmental preschool teacher. This year I am considered a Life Skills/Developmental preschool teacher. I still get to enjoy many of the same students and continue utilizing the things purchased through this donors choose project and again, thank you again for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Walden

Working with children from 3 years old to 9 years old can be challenging. I am trying to create an environment for my morning resource students and my afternoon preschool students, where they have choices to work comfortably and learn more than just Math and Reading. I plan to create a special place in the room for the students to go to when they need time to calm down or just need to be alone. Helping my students understand their feelings and work through meltdowns so they can spend increased time in the general education environment is my goal. The special place in my classroom will contain the feelings rug and mirror, as well as different fidgets that I already use with them. They will have pictures and books that help them remember the strategies that we work on to help them calm down when needed. The weighted vests are used to help children calm down by applying pressure, like a hug, that helps to keep some students grounded. By offering my students a quiet place, flexible seating, and other calming choices, it is my hope that they will establish life long coping strategies and become successful adults.
