My students have developed a misconception about non fiction books due to their lack of familiarity. They associate the word non fiction with a Science or Social Studies textbook. My focus with this book is to implement California Common Core ELA literacy, write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/experiments, or technical processes. The text will serve as a model to show students on how to write non fiction text to engage readers. In addition this text aligns with the College and Career readiness standard of Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity 10, Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently. I want to open their minds to the perspective that informative text can still tell a story. They are teenagers who have lived through a pandemic and faced a variety of challenging situations in their school, their community, and their homes, and I want them to be able to leave their mark, and tell their stories in a high quality narrative.
