This year, I've added a reading intervention to my course load. In addition to providing high interest books for my grade-level readers (those who might not venture to the library but trust me to help them find a great book), I also need some age-appropriate but lower-level books for fluency practice. Research shows that the best way to get better at reading is by reading more. Kids need books to choose from, preferably books that they WILL choose from. I've chosen award winners, books with great messages, and books from a series they will read in their language arts classes. These books also reflect high-interest topics that students will be learning about in their social studies classes, like police brutality and modern-day slavery, plus topics about which kids are just plain curious. There are also plenty of children's books for the reluctant readers; these will also be used to practice fluency!
