Graphic Novels to Engage Reluctant Readers in Middle School
Funded Apr 10, 2012Thank you for your donations. The Library of Doom graphic novels that were purchased have been used by over sixty students. Several students reached their Accelerated Reader goal by reading these books. By reaching their Accelerated Reader goals, they have improved their grades in their English classes. More importantly, they appear to be enjoying the process of reading!!
My students tend to be reluctant readers for various reasons. I have found that the books purchased because of your donations are popular. Students with dyslexia like the spacing of the words. Students who are struggling with lengthy books like the fact that they are reading a Chapter Book that is short. Students who think books are boring have found these ones entertaining.
Thank you for giving my students the opportunity to feel successful at the task of reading. I have some students who have read all of the books in the series that I requested (approximately 13 titles). Without your donations, my students might not have experienced the joy of reading and the sense of accomplishment that comes from finishing a book and being able to show that they understood it!!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Olaes
