Currently, we have desks. Desks are clunky and waste time. Tables will allow more space around the room for flexible seating. Time will be saved because students will not have to search through their messy desks for papers, take time cleaning their desks, or store distracting items in their desks that take away from learning time. Because 5th graders are naturally chatty, these collaborative tables will use this characteristic as a strength to move students forward. Instead of teaching my students to be quiet, I want them to learn how and when to use their voices productively. Tables will offer students opportunities to communicate and share. Collaboration is a skill that all students need when they enter the world. They need to know how to agree and disagree with others. They need to know how to offer, receive, and compromise on ideas. Sharing tables is a great way to foster that collaboration. In our classroom, we have flexible seating. These tables will help us move away from the idea that they have "their" spot in the room. Tables will encourage students to be more flexible about where they sit and who they sit by. They offer greater choice for students to choose spots where they will be successful.
