The 8 and 9 year old students from Washington Heights come into my classroom excited and ready to learn. Some of them walk with their parents from their apartment and others get to school after a long ride on the subway. Whether rain or shine, my students arrive to school with their homework completed and their pencils sharpened. Many of my students come from Spanish-speaking homes and nearly all qualify for free or reduced lunch. Several of my students are English Language Learners and a quarter of them require Special Education services.
