  • A Classroom Without Computers

    Funded Nov 29, 2016

Thank you so much for helping to fund our three new classroom laptops! We are so excited to have some technology to use for typing practice, research and group projects and multimedia presentations. All of my students benefit from strong visual supports for learning and often need more individualized content (videos, images, interactive websites) than I had been able to provide with just one classroom computer. They also respond very positively to creating projects with technology and with three more computers, more students can create at a time. Many of my students have fine motor delays that make traditional writing with pencil and paper very difficult. My hope is that with some practice and exposure, my students who struggle the most with writing will be able to transition to typing for much of their classwork.

While my students are very new to using technology as a learning tool (as opposed to a source of entertainment), they are really excited to practice the skills that will have them typing and effectively researching in no time. Many of these early skills are available as web quests and games so the kids are engaged in fun activities while completing independent work stations that will help develop necessary abilities. The headphones allow them to use audio independently without disrupting others and the mice help with students who are new to touchpad technology. These computers are such valuable tools for my students and we look forward to all the ways we'll get to use them this year!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mulcahy

  • It's the 21st Century?!

    Funded Jul 1, 2013

My students were thrilled to receive the two Samsung Tab 2 tablets that you helped to fund. They are so excited to have more technology than one old computer available for research, writing and games. They have already downloaded all their favorite apps.

Our tablets are used every single day. We use them during our English Language Arts block to read leveled texts from websites like ReadingA-Z and during Social Studies to access our online curriculum, Unique. We even have a program to create personalized daily newspapers! Our math teacher uses math games to develop automaticity with math facts, and of course, the students love to play their favorite educational games during free time.

With the addition of two tablets, I am able to better differentiate my lessons by accessing interactive sites like readwritethink, Scholastic, Starfall and Storyline to address multiple learning styles. The students are engaged by using technology as well as developing marketable skills. The mobility of the tablets also allows students who prefer learning outside of their desks to take their tasks to a more comfortable spot and students working in groups to move to other locations to complete tasks.

Technology is an invaluable part of today's classrooms and I'm happy to say we have finally entered the 21st century.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mulcahy

  • Leveled Readers for a Diverse Classroom

    Funded Nov 15, 2012

This is just a small note to express my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom project. The leveled library we received has become a cornerstone for literacy not just in my classroom, but in my whole school.

With the arrival of my Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Library, our administration recognized the need for appropriately leveled books and have supported libraries for more classrooms. Some of our students are experiencing success with reading for the very first time! The importance of accessible texts has been evident in how eager my previously reluctant readers have become to select the perfect "Just Right" books for their book baskets. Thank you so much for your contribution to this wonderful transformation that I've seen in my classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Mulcahy

My students are 6th-8th graders with intellectual and emotional disabilities and autism in a 12:1:1 self-contained, alternately-assessed class in Brooklyn, NY. Over 90% of the school receives free lunch. Several of my students are English Language Learners. Academic abilities range from pre-K level to 5th grade in both reading and math. My class is very socially high functioning and VERY energetic. As middle school students, they are keenly aware of peer opinions and enjoy working cooperatively. They are eager to learn and participate readily in class activities, especially those that allow for movement. They love jokes and stories and tracking their own progress.
