  • One Book Connecting the World: Global Read Aloud 2024

    Funded Oct 3, 2024

We are so excited! Believe it or not, kids still get excited about reading! Thank you for your generosity. It's people like you who help to make sure that my kids are able to get the "extra" things for our classroom. It makes me happy that you have allowed me to provide them with this experience.”

  • Indoor Recess Can Be Fun!

    Funded Jun 2, 2023

    Thank you for your donations.

These items came right on time.

Imagine not being able to go out to Recess, not just for a day, but for days. That's what happened because of the air quality.

We had no worries, because our shipment had arrived with the items you helped purchased.

We had so much fun playing rousing games of UNO. The students were delighted when they would hit me with a Draw 4 card.

In another section of the room, the NERF basketball hoop kept students active.(In a safe way, of course.)

And in another, beanbags were tossed and JENGA blocks fell, but it was all good.

We really enjoyed these resources and I know next year's class will as well.”

  • 3d Pens Provide "STEMtastic" Opportunities!

    Funded Dec 14, 2022

Sometimes the students I teach get left out of the chance to explore STEM opportunities. The emphasis is on reading, writing, and arithmetic.:)

I don't think people are aware that participating in STEM opportunities like these, not only expose our students to a world beyond reading and Math, but it incorporates reading and math as well.

My students LOVE the 3D Pens!

I opened the box and left it up to them to figure it out, and they did! They quickly became experts on how to use the pens, and are now moving into creating things with them. It's amazing to see their creativity "come to life.!"

Thank you for providing my class the chance to be exposed to STEM opportunities!”

  • Never Too Old For A Read Aloud!

    Funded Dec 19, 2022

Unfortunately, kids don't read like they used to. The other day a student said to me, "I read because I have to, but I don't like it." No educator wants to hear that. :(

And that is why your donation to this project is so important. The students hold on to their own copy of the book, "Thirst", which we read aloud as a class, and they are engaged!

Every day that we read "Thirst" together, the students are mad when we have to stop. They are engrossed in this story.

Not only that, but it is a story about a different culture, a family from Mumbai, India, so we are learning new things about the culture every day. Our discussions lead to many thought provoking moments. We keep Google up on the Smartboard, to use as a reference for things we are not familiar with.

And finally, incorporating reading strategies in a novel, instead of a worksheet, makes it so much easier for me to introduce the concepts that promote these skills.

We are very appreciative of your donation!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hudson

  • Back to School, Safely!

    Funded Sep 21, 2021

Thank you for the resources you provided. They have definitely made a difference in how we returned to our classroom. Each item by itself is small, but the impact is great.

The main thing I wanted, for each of my students, was for them to have something of their own. I didn't want them to be concerned about sharing items.

We use computers a lot in our classroom, so it was important that we did not share headphones. Each child was excited to get their own headphones. something that most of our parents couldn't provide. That wouldn't have happened without you. Also worries about sharing pencils or gluesticks were eliminated they were available for each child.

And we can't forget the Lysol wipes. They were a lifesaver! Every day my students wiped down their desk at the end of the day. They even made sure they wiped down the desk of any student that was absent.:) This routine provided a way for my students to feel safe about being in the classroom again.

What a difference the little things make! Thank you for helping to create an environment where we felt safe returning to school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hudson

  • An Escape From Reality! Global Read Aloud 2021

    Funded May 7, 2021

Thank you so much for your donation that funded our project, a copy of the novel, "The Jumbies" for each of my students, to use while we participated in the Global Read Aloud 2021.

How do you become a better reader? READ. That's the opportunity you have provided my students. Having a copy of their own book makes such a difference, especially when it is a great story.

The great part about using the books that are chosen for GRA is that they lend themselves to teaching reading skills without stopping and asking questions like, "What's the main idea?" The discussions we have after enjoying a few pages every day, read aloud, is more than enough to "practice" main idea, sequence, foreshadowing, building vocabulary, etc...

Pre-pandemic, we would sit on our carpet, book in hand, and listen as I read. Now, students are at their desk, books in hand, listening as I read from the front of the room, mask on.

But, that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of a great story or the connections we have made with others who were reading the same book.

And you know the best part? They get to keep the book, to be read over and over, or enjoyed with a family member. Gotta love it!:)”

  • The Better to See You, My Dear!

    Funded Dec 2, 2020

This year I was a Virtual Teacher. My entire year was devoted to distance learning. Every day, I connected with my students via computer. So, trust me when I say that, the laptop and monitor, that was provided through your generosity, had a huge impact on our virtual learning journey.

The technology I used was as basic as the platform my students used to access their work, play academic games, and as complicated, as turning their Natural Disaster Research projects into digital books, complete with videos!

And of course, I had to have the right tools in order to make this happen for them. The monitor added an extra pair of eyes, and a bigger screen. The laptop provided an up to date space, where I could create, and then share, lessons that would engage my students.

The tools you provided made this journey bearable for my students and I! :)”

  • Learning from Home!

    Funded Nov 30, 2020

Without tech in this virtual learning environment, I don't know where I would be right now. The main thing that I am able to do with the second monitor I received, is the opportunity to keep an eye on my students.

In this learning environment, it is so easy to get distracted. Instead of listening to me, or engaging in their work, students find themselves drawn to Youtube , Spotify, or other sites with more appeal.

With the second monitor, I have my students faces on one, and Securly on the other. If someone gets off task, it is easy for me to send a private message that shows up on their screen and brings their attention back to class. I can also push out links to the class at once. If the students need me, they can send messages as well, maintaining their privacy. It's a lifesaver!

The students really appreciated the headphones. Many of them did not have headphones, and our school did not have any to give out. Most of the students use them every day because they are not the only people in their house. There are adults and siblings working from home as well. The headphones help them concentrate, and block out whatever else is going on around them. The technology provided has given my students the means to stay focused in class, even though they are working from home.”

  • Global Read Aloud20- Bringing Diverse Characters to Our Classroom!

    Funded Aug 2, 2020

The great part about teaching with books I use for the Global Read Aloud Project is that my students always enjoy them. That's the first step, getting them to actually read the book.

Every day that I read aloud, I ask them to let me know of any connections they may experience as I read. (Text to text, text to self, text to world).I look for ways to incorporate skills we have learned. For example, I might read a phrase that demonstrates figurative language and ask them what the author meant. When they listen to me read, they are able to hear what a fluent reader sounds like.

Because we are virtual, we are on Zoom and I read aloud for five minutes a day. It's supposed to be five minutes, but the conversations we have extends the time. My students have their book at home, so they are able to follow along as I read. Later on, I will choose "Guest Readers" (the students), to read aloud.

Oh yes, most of them are enjoying the book. If I start ELA without reading aloud, I hear, "Ummm, Mrs.Mims, aren't we going to read "Indian No More" today? Most of them are excited to know what is going to happen to this character, who is their age, and is experiencing things some of them have.

Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves, and learn from, the diverse character in this story!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hudson

My students are wonderful! They are a diverse group of students in terms of race, gender, and levels of instruction. I have students who work at high levels and love to be challenged, down to students who need that extra push. We are an elementary school that is working hard to get our students ready for the 21st century!
