As a high school special education teacher, I have the immense privilege of working with students who challenge me to expand my worldview by showing me diverse ways of thinking and doing. My students are classified as having Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disabilities, and Multiple Disabilities. In my three years of working with these students, I have come to learn that these classifications are not deficits that need to be fixed, but rather a style of learning and living that gives them a dynamic range of skills and abilities. I fundamentally believe that all students have the drive to learn. With the appropriate tools, settings, and approach, all students can learn. My students require diverse instructional approaches and resources to match their diverse abilities so that they can reach their full potential.
