Reading Rewards
Funded Dec 29, 2010Thank you so much for taking the time to donate to our classroom for this project. Students have really been enjoying all of the wonderful "reading rewards." Students were excited about all of the objects but the star reader pencils and smelly stickers were perhaps the biggest hits. We can add these stickers to writing journals, folders, and bookmarks. The pencils are always a hot item and very useful.
Studnent have also been very impressed by the prize box. There is a great variety of objects that have been encouraging all readers!
I really appreciate all of your help. Please know that you have made a big difference in the lives of some awesome students who love to read.”

Ms. Zeglin
Library Matters
Funded Dec 10, 2010Thank you so much for taking the time and money to donate to this project. We just received the materials today and already they are coming in handy.
The tape is really a lifesaver for worn and torn paperback novels. I cannot bear to throw away such well-loved classics. Now, I plan to teach students how to carefully tape and repair these novels.
We are planning to use the tie-dye library pockets in finishing a bulletin board containing our reading recommendations by genre. With your help, students were able to dream up the idea for this interactive bulletin board and now create it in real-life!
We will use the other supplies to update our library signs so people know where to return books.
Thank you for all you have done. I really appreciate it!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Zeglin
This classroom project was brought to life by The Horace Mann Companies and 3 other donors.Addicted To Reading
Funded Nov 27, 2010Thank you so much for helping us getting these books. The excitement that these books bring to classroom is hard to describe. As any reader knows, it is difficult to wait when you want to read the next book in a series or a new novel from a favorite author. You have made that a thing of the past in our classroom. These new books are being checked out and read as soon as they come out of the box.
Your support means more than I can say. Just to know that people are supporting our love of reading means a lot!
Thank you.”

iPad Mania
Funded Nov 30, 2010It is hard to even come close to describing the impact of this iPad on our classroom. Really, everything about it has been positive. It is like the entire world opened up to us! It is so easy for a student to jump on the Internet and google something for more information during a class discussion. A student who may not typically participate is suddenly excited to be in class. It is simple and fun to access our online textbook. We've discovered many cool and educational apps. I could go on and on!
Please know that you have all made a huge impact with your support. Thank you”

Stuck on Positive
Funded Oct 26, 2010It is a great honor to be able to thank everyone who donated to this project. Reading and writing can be very hard work for students. However, with your help, many students will be more motivated to do this difficult work. Students have been very excited to be receiving scratch-n-sniff stickers and their written work and exams. It is a great motivator to these students have received this sticker. Although it may be a small thing, a sticker is a terrific way to say "Good Job!" You have really made this possible.
Thank you for all you have done!”

Writing Etc.
Funded Oct 25, 2010Thank you so much for making generous donations! As soon as we opened the materials, we began to use them. It is such a pleasure to have the "Writer's Block" activity box. Students asked me to read them some prompts. The pencils really take the pressure off when a student runs out of lead or a pencil goes missing. Tomorrow, we are going to use the sentence strips to analyze the poem, "The Highwayman."
I also plan to use that "safe" paper cutter tomorrow. We try to be environmentally conscience and recycle paper. We are going to cut some scraps of used paper into squares to recycle them.
Thank you again for all of your help. Everything in those boxes will go to good use. We will think of you during every "Writer's Block" activity!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Zeglin
Needful Things
Funded Oct 22, 2010I cannot thank you enough for the HP printer ink and paper. I am happy to say that we have used it but still will have plenty of ink for the months to come. I printed out some color photos for a bulletin board for the poem entitled "The Highwayman." The pictures look beautiful.
Students are just working on their final drafts for an ancient Roman research project. The project is a one page newsletter with two photographs. We are going to print out some of these in color to display in the hallway. Students also want to print out a color sign in Latin and see if people can guess the quote! You have made all of this possible!
Thank you for helping brighten the lives of students (literally)! ”

Podcasting Fun
Funded Oct 23, 2010Thank you so much for making a donation to this project. I never thought that podcasting could open up so many doors. Students who "hated" reading and school are now eagerly thinking about their scripts and what they want to say. To me, this is the future. We need to share and collorborate not just in the classroom but throughout the world.
You make this possible for these students! They are only limited by their imaginations. With these tools, these students can be held throughout the world. How exciting!
Thank you!”

Touching Our Future with iPads!
Funded Nov 9, 2010Wow! This iPad has really changed our lives. It is like students are really able to touch the future! From the first second we received this iPad, students have been learning and exploring. It is so awesome to hear students discussing educational apps and videos. They are very serious about really using this technology so they the class can all benefit from it. Right now, we are just exploring different free apps. Students have been doing a great job sharing and helping each other.
No of this would be possible without all of you! You have truly touched our lives.
Thank you!”

Uploading an E-Classroom
Funded Oct 23, 2010Thank you so much for contributing to our classroom. I'm sorry that there are no pictures of the HD FFlip camera but I was using it to take the photos. It is so easy to use and user-friendly. Students cannot wait to start filming video book talks for the whole school to see. I cannot believe how many ideas that this camera has generated. All of this is due to your generous donations.
Also, the ihome is a lifesaver. Just today, I trying to share a song version of the poem we are studying with students. My desktop computer froze up. I was able to play the song using an ipod and the ihome. Students were able to listen to "The Highwayman" song and follow along in their textbooks.
Thank you for all the wonderful things that you have done for us!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Zeglin
