Most of my students take public transportation to school and often eat their only meals of the day at school. Yet they are some of the most talented and hard working students a teacher could ask for. My school is very diverse being nearly 70% African American, 10% from over 50 different countries and approximately 20% Caucasian. Many of my students come from very poor families but they don't let that bring down their spirits. My students know that my classroom is a safe place to be and a place where they are free to express themselves. I love my students and my school. I want to be able to show them that although we are in a low-income school, we can still compete with high-income schools artistically. While I already enter my students' work into many art competitions locally and nationally, I do not have the capability of entering any photographs. Whenever I survey my students on what they want to learn, they always respond with, "I want to learn how to take better pictures."
