• Let's Read: Stories and Storytelling!

  Thank you so much for providing my students with the collection of folk tales and fairy tales along with the storytelling kit to support retelling and revising by English learners.

  The multicultural Cinderella stories have been especially popular. My students seem to enjoy the parallel plots from different versions around the world. We are also enjoying the Rapunzel tale. Who doesn't like a story in which magic and love overcome the best efforts of a witch to derail a young couple's destiny?

  These glossy little books are filled with key English vocabulary. With the science, math, and social studies topics, they provide lots of opportunities for students to learn the words they need to build academic skills in middle school as they are mastering a new language. These books are a great first step for students who are new to the country.

  We've got these new books spread across two table tops in our classroom. It is impossible for students to walk past these books without something catching their eye! With books about snakes and wolves, sharks and mummies, we've got something for just about everyone to read.

  Our classroom is full of appealing new books, thanks to your generous donation!

  We've run out of shelf space and began spreading our picture book collection across tabletops. It's a wonderful way to see the colorful covers of this books, and it inspires students to pick up something to read as they walk into the room. With a variety of different books in the collection, there is something for everyone to read.

• Hissing Cockroaches and Carnivorous Plants!

  Thank you so much for providing my students with a collection of carnivorous plants and some live giant hissing Madagascar cockroaches.

  Cockroaches may not be the first classroom pet to come to mind, but they have been a pleasant and interesting addition to our classroom. The Covid-related masking requirement does make communication a touch more challenging, particularly in a classroom of newcomer English language learners. It turned out that many of my students had been waiting on giant KISSING Madagascar cockroaches, although they were impressed by the hissing of our new insects and adjusted quickly.

  We enjoyed taking a quick outside break to collect crickets for our Venus flytraps. In a year of so many stresses and challenges, it has been so nice to enjoy some simple outside time searching for insects to feed our plants.

• Morning Tubs: Color and Create!

  Thank you so much for providing us with exciting new materials to use in our Morning Tubs! The hands-on materials and art supplies have added so much to our early morning launch to the school day.

  The Magna-Tiles have been particularly popular with students. They are easy to use, quick to clean up, and so flexible. Watching my young teens get excited over their Magna-Tile creations has persuaded me that I need to implement more LEGO and other building supplies into our school day.

  Graphic novels are among the most popular reading choices in my classroom, and my students are always asking me to get more of them. With this varied selection of new books, I will be able to keep my students happily reading for weeks. We've got new realistic fiction, some mystery, a little sci fi, and lots of scary books. With graphic novels like these, it will be a breeze to keep my students reading.”
