  • The Slings and Arrows of Outrageous Fortune: Hamlet (2)

    Funded Jan 22, 2024

Thank you so much, donors, for contributing to this project. This was our second project for Hamlet graphic novels, and it has supplied the edition that has become the students' very favorite. The pictures are appealing, the pages are slick and fun to turn, and there is an interesting visual with actual texture on the front cover. These things matter!

We are moving into annual English proficiency testing, so we've had to put Hamlet temporarily on hold. The students ask me every day when we'll get back to Hamlet and Ophelia. Meanwhile, they've read "letters" from Gertrude's mother to Gertrude (and responded to them as Gertrude) and made lots of connections between people in their daily lives and characters like Hamlet and Polonius.

Thank you so much for helping us continue to feel excitement about Shakespeare!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Livingstone

  • The Slings and Arrows of Outrageous Fortune: Hamlet

    Funded Dec 31, 2023

My students were so excited to see the graphic novel versions of Hamlet on my desk. Thank you so much for your generous gift!

My students are so engaged in the story of Hamlet. They view it as a bit of a soap opera which, in fact, it is, although a lot more than just a soap opera. I've been dithering a bit over how long we can draw this story out before someone gets on Netflix, watches a film version to the end, and then spills the beans to the rest of the class.

Now, with these graphic novels, we'll all be able to make it to the end. Thank you again for your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Livingstone

  • The Fallen: Hooked on a Series!

    Funded Dec 29, 2023

My students were so excited to see the sequel to Brother in Arms show up in our classroom. Thank you so much for your generous gift!

We are in an odd little patch just after Winter Break and before annual English proficiency testing begins; it is the perfect time to enjoy reading The Fallen together. We'll be able to use it as a springboard for lots of the writing assignments we need to be completing to get ready to show off our language growth in a couple of weeks.

My students are so appreciative of your support. Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Livingstone

  • Building Kits: Building Our Engineering Skills!

    Funded Nov 27, 2023

After a long week of working on proportion problems and writing, I pulled out the new LEGO and Snap Circuit electronics kits today, and the students had a blast putting things together! Some students struggled a bit at first, but no one quit, and no one got mad; they kept on trying, working together, and eventually were able to successfully put together some simple projects.

There is nothing my students like better than building together. Now that we have a selection of kits to work with, each student can be fully involved in reading directions and putting pieces together. In fact, we have enough kits now that we may be able to invite students from other classes in to join us!

Thank you so much for making this possible.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Livingstone

  • LEGO: Building Our STEM Skills!

  • Let's Read! Books in Spanish

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

Today we had our first independent reading time with the new Spanish language books you provided, and it was a HUGE success! The kids were so excited to come into our classroom and see all the colorful new books laid out across a table.

Most of my students can read a little in Spanish. Some of them are able to read grade level chapter books in Spanish. They immediately picked up the Harry Potter books and began looking through them. The room was filled with a comfortable peace as students began to read.

Thank you so much for your generous gift.”

  • Let's Read! Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Spanish Edition)

    Funded Nov 28, 2023

Today, my students walked into the classroom to a display of new books spread across a tabletop, and their jaws just dropped when they saw that we now have so many different books from the Spanish language edition of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. They were delighted!

We had a very calm and peaceful reading time with about half of the class selecting one of the Spanish language Diary of a Wimpy Kid books to read. At the end of class, three students were urgently trying to persuade me to have another reading period first thing Monday morning so that they could continue to read their books.

Thank you so much for making this possible for my students.”

  • STEM Exploration: Electronics Kit and Headphones!

    Funded Oct 23, 2023

The headphones are labeled, numbered, and stored in a convenient location in the classroom. Students will begin using them in two days on Monday.

Thank you so much for providing these essentials to my students. A class full of lively sixth graders can be a bit loud in the best of times. Adding in the sound from a dozen or more Chromebooks squawking away at the same time, and the noise becomes entirely too distracting.

With our new headphones, things will be much calmer in our classroom. Students will be able to hear instruction and directions as they work, and they will not have to filter out the sound from the other students' computers.

Thank you again for your help.”

  • Young Engineers: Why Did the Titanic Sink?

    Funded Oct 24, 2023

I decided not to tell the students that this Titanic project had funded. Instead, I placed a couple of the new Spanish language books on the railing of our whiteboard where I knew students would catch sight of them.

And, did they ever! Immediate bedlam resulted! My students were so excited to read the new books about the Titanic. I have not yet told them that we have LEGO-style models of the Titanic to put together; I'm waiting until our first Centers Day to bring those out.

Your generous donation has brought so much delight and happiness to my students. Thank you so much!”

  • Art and Music: a Peaceful Crafting Club

    Funded Oct 11, 2023

Our first Music and Crafts Club session is coming up this week, and, thanks to your generous donation, we are ready to roll! We'll be leading off with some plastic canvas projects using the yarn and needles you donated. A little later, we'll be creating tissue paper flowers and making friendship bracelets in multiple bright colors.

Our club session is a short period of time, but it is something that everyone will look forward to each week. With the clay and tissue paper you provided, we will always have something to work on together.

Thank you again for your support.”
