  • Fortnite: New World Reading

    Funded Jan 6, 2019

Whew! The excitement generated by students throughout the building over the presence of a PlayStation 4 in our classroom is impressive and exhausting! Thank you so much for donating to this special project.

We have been working hard on trying to get our new equipment to function. Students have stayed after school and stopped in to work on figuring out the snags. Although we have not yet been successful, we have built relationships and camaraderie during the process, and we still have high hopes of working things out.

Thank you again for supporting my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Livingstone

  • Chromebooks: Digital Learning 2

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

Thank you so much for providing my students with three more classroom Chromebooks.

My Discovery students are simply zipping along as they master math objectives using Khan Academy and Chromebooks. Last week, three of my students had the confidence to stand up in their math class and show other students how to solve complicated sums of consecutive integers problems. They were very proud of themselves for understanding how to reason their way through the problems.

It is thanks to donors like you that my students are able to work independently on their levels to strengthen their math skills. We appreciate your support.”

  • Polar Bears and a Big Red Ball

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

The polar bear books, polar bear blankets and big red ball have arrived. Thank you so much!

We haven't had a chance to use the ball because we've had rain for weeks on end, but the cozy polar bear blankets have been very popular in our chilly classroom. Students wrap them around their legs when they read, and the blankets are helping keep us more comfortable.

The polar bear books are welcome additions to our library. We recently learned that polar bears have black skin, blue tongues and 2-inch teeth. It has been fun to find this same information in the books.

Thank you again for your generosity.”

  • All About Reading: Spanish Titles!

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

Thank you so much for giving my students this box of great new books.

The books arrived this week, and the boys who selected the titles were very excited about unpacking the box and taking the first few home to read. The next day, the boys presented the new books to the class. Immediately, most of the class checked out a book or two to read at home, and the books have been flying in and out of the room ever since. They have been a most welcome addition to our classroom library.

Thank you again for helping to keep my students reading. Your generous gift is helping turn young teens into avid readers who talk to one another about good books they've read.”

  • Chromebooks: Digital Learning

    Funded Feb 19, 2019

The new Chromebooks arrived Friday afternoon. We were able to get them on the network almost immediately, and my students were very pleased to begin using them today.

Thank you so much for your generous gift! Today my students were working in Google Classroom on a polar bear presentation designed to build their understanding of mood and message. Without a Chromebook for each student, this kind of project is not possible.

We are so grateful for your support. Your gift is helping young teens learn more about the world as they build their reading and writing skills.”

  • Pens and Pencils: Basic Supplies

    Funded Dec 18, 2018

Thank you so much for providing my students with pencils and felt tip pens.

We were using the pens this afternoon to annotate "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus" by William Carlos Williams. The students were so pleased to be able to open new packages of colorful pens to use as they compared the theme of this poem and the Bruegel painting which inspired the poem to other paintings depicting the tragedy of Icarus in a very different way.

The sharpened pencils are such a luxury and have given us back all the time previously spent in line at the pencil sharpener. The work of mastering a new language and new academic content at the same time is challenging enough. Your gift has made our challenges a little easier to overcome.

Thank you again for the gift of pens and pencils. Your generosity is helping build young readers, writers and thinkers.”

  • Get on the Reading Train! Spanish Books

    Funded Dec 19, 2018

The new books arrived this week, and the young man who selected them for our class brought the box to our classroom to open it with his classmates.

I had a wonderful time watching him pull book after book from the box, reading out each title with excitement. "Serpientes! Tacos y Dragones! Chupacabras!" His classmates agreed that he could have first pick of the new books, and he immediately settled into reading in a comfortable beanbag chair with his first book in hand and another half dozen stacked beside him.

Thank you so much for partnering with me to help my students become avid readers.”

    With gratitude,

  • The Hate U Give: Spanish Edition

    Funded Oct 17, 2018

The trip to see the film The Hate U Give has been scheduled for early in December, and girls in my classroom are excited to be reading both the English and the Spanish versions of the book in preparation.

Thank you so much for providing us with copies of this book! The themes of the book are relevant and engaging, and the characters have students delighted to be reading. All of these things are important for building strong learners who read regularly.

Thank you again for your generous donation. Your gift is helping middle school students get excited about reading!”

  • Bone and Amulet: Great Graphic Novel Book Sets!

    Funded Oct 25, 2018

The Bone and Amulet books you generously provided for my students are already hot items in our classroom. Thank you so much for providing us with titles to fill in the gaps in our classroom library.

These two graphic novel sets are always very popular. They are books that are read by both our newest arrivals and by more English proficient students. I've never had a student who did not like these books.

Having additional copies of the first few books in each series allows students to get hooked on them. After reading the first few titles, they are ready to finish the entire series.

Thank you again for your gift.”

  • Pretty Little Liars: Engaging New Readers

    Funded Oct 22, 2018

Thank you so much for providing my students with the Pretty Little Liar books and related materials.

My girls began reading these books as soon as they arrived. Today I gave them copies to take home and keep. They were excitedly sniffing the delicious "new book smell" and exclaiming that they would finish the entire series. This book may not be my cup of tea, but it is exactly what my new readers needed to dive into chapter books.

Thank you again. Your generous gift is helping my young teens become avid readers.”
