Flexible Seating for All!
Funded Nov 16, 2018On a daily basis, and throughout the day, my students are using the flexible seating that I purchased through your generous donations. They use this during independent work, whole class lessons, group work, and partnerships. The flexibility in seating has allowed students choice and freedom to better complete their assignments in a comfortable and relaxed manner, leading to greater confidence and higher level of success and satisfaction.
When my students first saw the materials, they were in AWE. There was very high demand to try out the seats and use them in the classroom.
I continue to write grants and plan projects for my students. My current proposals include a cart to house their backpacks, as we do not have a closet in our room and their belongings are left in a pile on the floor, and a set of Google Chromebooks to further their research abilities and computing skills using cloud-based software systems. I believe that in order to prepare them for middle school, and future college and career-readiness, they need as many opportunities to apply computing skills in the classroom.
Thank you again for your generous donation to my classroom. I can assure you that your contribution was tremendously received and appreciated, and has made an impact on the learning going on in 5-417!”

Mrs. Bloom

Funded May 11, 2018Thank you so much for your very generous contribution to my classroom. With your help, I've been able to purchase a Silhouette vinyl cutting machine for use in my classroom, along with additional vinyl and tools to work with the machine.
When the machine was delivered, the students were so excited to watch me open it! I showed them a brief video explaining what it could do, and they were captivated.
We've used this machine in many ways. We've labeled items in the classroom, created an "Anchor Chart" book for each table which holds smaller-sized pictures of charts we've made to support our learning, posted thoughtful and inspirational quotes in the hallways of the school, and planned a school-wide initiative to "beautify" our bathrooms. We'll be making quotes and sayings to hang in the bathrooms to make the students across the school feel special, loved, and supported.
We'll continue to use this machine to enhance our projects and support our learning. Thank you so much for your thoughtful gift!”

We Love Technology and Learning!
Funded Dec 25, 2017Thank you so much for your donation towards a computer in my classroom.
Many of the children in my class do not have direct access to the Internet and computing technology at home. They come to school each day eager to expand their knowledge through research online, and look for every opportunity to do so.
The addition of a laptop in our classroom allows are students to work in groups and collaborate as they research. We have incorporated this technology into all of the content areas. Most frequently, during Social Studies, the students travel to places they wouldn't otherwise get to visit using Google Earth. This multi-dimensional experience allows them to ask higher-order questions and gain valuable experiences that will further prepare them for career and college readiness, an ongoing trend today in education.
For some of my students, the physical act of writing is incredibly tedious. There are fine motor struggles that inhibit successful writing, which often leads to poor penmanship. Having a mobile laptop enables them to type their responses, leading to a faster output of work, coupled with greater satisfaction in the ability to re-read their pieces and have other students able to read their work as well.
Again, thank you so much for your contribution to my project. I greatly appreciate your commitment to public education in New York City.”

Funded Apr 12, 2015I can't begin to tell you what an impact this has had on my classroom since school began. My students were thrilled when they learned about the assessment binders they would manage and maintain throughout the school year.
My students (all 32 of them) have individual assessment binders with personalized, decorated covers designed by them! Within each binder are 5 divided sections for ELA Reading, ELA Writing, Math, Social Studies and Science. Each time a child takes an assessment, it goes into their binder in chronological order by section. This enables the students to be able to look back at their progress and set attainable goals for their continued growth. The results so far have been phenomenal. And an added bonus...they've been taught to manage these materials themselves!”

Watch Our Words POP!
Funded Apr 2, 2015My students have been blown away by the variety of Sharpie markers we have in the classroom! They marvel at the colors, the pen tip options and are so excited when given the opportunity to use them!
We use the Sharpies for most of our projects, both independently and within groups. Additionally, when students are crafting published writing pieces, they rewrite their pieces in black Sharpie to make the words POP!
The project has boosted my students learning by allowing them a creative outlet with a variety of choices in color, tip, and medium.
Thank you so much for your generous contribution and unwavering support.”

Artists are Everywhere!
Funded Oct 12, 2014I cannot begin to tell you the impact that your donation has had on my students. The students were beyond excited as we unpacked the boxes and examined all of the fabulous art materials that I was able to purchase with your generous contribution. The students marveled at the colors and various mediums, excitedly chattering about the murals and creations we would craft in our club.
We have already crafted a monogram canvas, where students created a unique monogram with their initials. They sketched with pencil, outlined with Sharpie, and used watercolor paints to make their lettering come alive.
We have designed murals emphasizing different parts of the Jackson Heights neighborhood where our school is. The students used watercolor paint and tissue paper to make their representations of the cultural diversity of Jackson Heights. They are beautiful!
We have designed canvases with paper and paint that depict our favorite foods! They will be displayed in our school cafeteria for all to see.
Our next projects include, but are not limited to:
Signage for our school in Spanish and English so that visitors know where to go;
Set designs for our annual school production;
Tissue paper decoupage flowers for our Spring display at PS 212;
Portraits of our key school staff for the main office;
....and many, many others.
As an educator, these continued projects have boosted my teaching and my students' learning immeasurably. In a climate where high-stakes testing is the focal point for governor, these projects enabled my students to have a creative outlet not connected to ELA, MATH, Common Core, or test prep. For that alone, this opportunity has been tremendous. My students come to my club eager to create and express themselves. This is an outlet for their creative talents, as well as my own!
I truly appreciate your gift and assure you that it is being used by very lovely and appreciative children. Thank you for your support of my commitment to public education for all.”
