Funded Jan 23, 2022My class is a special education classroom for students who aren't thriving in general education classrooms and are well behind their peers in reading, writing, and math. Most of my students have an autism diagnosis. I was given three tables to use to seat my students at because there's a desk-shortage at my school. Sharing space is especially difficult for people on the spectrum, and my students fought and complained a lot when their table-partners did things that irritated them. We had to move students around every couple of week to try to alleviate the personality-clashes.
In addition to that, sitting in such close proximity to each other became a health hazard with the spread of the new Covid strains. We regularly had students out on quarantine, and it seemed like at least one student was always home sick.
When I found out about the special Donor's Choice funding I immediately wrote up a proposal to get some desks for our classroom. The students were SO excited when the desks arrived! They finally had their own space that they didn't have to share with anyone else! We could actually leave space between the desks to give everyone extra personal-space! (I know I've used the word "space" three times, but when you're not used to having it, it's such a luxurious word!) I've noticed that attendance has improved a lot, as well, and now it's not as common to have a student home sick! I'm able to do a lot more teaching! I am so grateful that this funding was made available to educators!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Lisa
