Most of my Special needs students come to me below reading level for elementary school. We spend 2 hours a day just on reading. Students work very hard to move through the levels of books so they will be at 6 months to a year ahead by the end of the school year. I work in a school where 80% of students receive free breakfast and lunch every day. They come to school with hungry tummies and hungry for knowledge. My students love to read fiction & non fiction books about animals and nature. They are always asking more questions about their reading material because they have the natural curiosity to learn about everything.
