The number one indicator of a child's reading growth is how much they read. These books will be used within the following reading units throughout the academic year: Character Study, Social Issues, Fantasy, Teen Activism, and Informational. The basic premise of these units is that students have access to many high-quality books! My classroom is in desperate need of books. Please help put high-interest books into the hands of my students. I hope to instill a love for reading to my students. For each unit, students are able to choose their own books that reflect the genre we are studying. Some of these books will be read aloud to model skills and to develop a love for learning, other books will be read in partnerships or small groups in book clubs, and finally I hope many of these books are read just for fun! These books are at various levels to meet the range of readers in my classroom. My students read at all different levels so to make sure ALL my students are engaged and have access to the text, we need books at various levels. Last, but not least, you will notice that many books that have been selected have diverse settings, characters, and story lines. Students in my school are very diverse and I tried to choose books that students might pick up and say, "Hey, that kid looks like me!" Or perhaps as a student is reading he might think, "Wow, I know exactly how this character is feeling, I too have went through that." These connections keep kids engaged and will push them to pick up the next book.
