Help Foster a Love of Reading!
Funded Sep 18, 2024Thank you so much for funding my project! My students love their new library books. Classroom teachers have been approaching me to tell me that students are taking out the new books to read them when they are done with their classwork. Seeing students check out books and knowing that they cherish the books is the greatest feeling. You are helping create a culture of literacy in my school and I will forever be grateful. Moreover, many students are beyond happy that these books are in Spanish. The language makes the books more accessible to my newcomer students.”

The kits and books have brought an unexpected yet delightful creative outlet to our library. Students who might not usually engage with traditional reading materials have found a new way to explore their creativity and build hands-on skills. The kits have sparked a new interest in balloon sculpting, and we've already seen students gathering in small groups, experimenting with techniques, and sharing their creations with one another. Funded Sep 9, 2024Thank you for purchasing books on making paper airplanes for my students. These books offer substantial benefits to both students and the school library in various educational and developmental areas. While they may seem like simple guides to a fun hobby, they are offering my students skill development, creativity, and cognitive growth.
Books on making paper airplanes often touch upon fundamental concepts in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). For instance, students can learn about aerodynamics, physics, and engineering principles through the process of designing and testing different types of paper planes. They can explore concepts like drag, lift, thrust, and gravity, and see how small changes in design—such as altering the wingspan or weight distribution—can affect a plane's flight.
Making paper airplanes isn't just a solo activity; it can easily become a social one. Students can collaborate on design ideas, share folding techniques, and even engage in friendly competition to see whose plane flies the farthest. These activities help build important social skills, such as teamwork, communication, and the ability to give and receive feedback. In group settings, students can work together to solve problems, improve designs, or compete in friendly challenges, which also helps to develop sportsmanship and cooperation.
Incorporating books on making paper airplanes into the school library enhances its offerings by adding fun, interactive, and engaging resources. Such books can appeal to students who may not normally engage with reading, as they provide an opportunity to learn through doing. The inclusion of these books can make the library a more dynamic place, showing students that learning can be fun and multi-dimensional. Additionally, these books can serve as a starting point for interdisciplinary projects that link science, math, art, and literature.”

Thanks to your support, we are now the proud owners of Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and Kites: Time to Fly. These additions have already begun to make a significant impact on our students, fostering a sense of community, enhancing strategic thinking, and providing countless hours of fun.
Settlers of Catan has quickly become a favorite among our students. Its blend of strategy, negotiation, and resource management offers a perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment. The game's intricate design encourages players to think critically and plan ahead, skills that are invaluable both in and out of the classroom. Watching students engage with each other, negotiating trades and celebrating victories, is a testament to the positive social interactions and teamwork that Catan promotes. Carcassonne, with its captivating tile-placement mechanics, has also been a hit. This game is not only fun but also educational, subtly teaching students about city planning, spatial awareness, and strategic foresight. The students' creativity shines as they build their own medieval landscapes, and the game's relatively simple rules make it accessible to a wide range of age groups. Carcassonne has provided an excellent opportunity for younger students to learn from older peers, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome and engaged.
Kites: Time to Fly has added a unique and exhilarating dynamic to our collection. This cooperative game emphasizes teamwork and communication as players work together to keep their kites in the air. It's been wonderful to see students collaborating, strategizing, and supporting one another in this fast-paced, engaging activity.
