My students have not had access to good art materials in the past and I want to give that to them now. The paper, erasers, paint, brayers, and other items will allow students this year and for years to come, to make art they are proud of. I am teaching in a low income school, and although the school is beautiful and the room is spacious, art rooms always need places to store 3D and 2D art which is something very hard to come by.
Students for years to come will benefit from every item and it will have a huge impact on their learning experience. I have tried to choose some basic items to help us get through the year. Specifically, newsprint paper is great for charcoal, pastels, graphite and even colored pencil and it allows a good surface for students to sketch or create a full-blown masterpiece; in the past, they have had to use plain copier paper. My students always beg me to let them paint and they have never had the correct materials but the aprons will keep them clean and the paint set will give us a great start. Gel medium can be added to some old paints we have to help give them a little more thickness so students can utilize everything we have as much as possible. Floral foam, wire, and cutters will all be used in floral design for arrangements when available.
These kids have had to paint on scrap matting board, use hand-me-down pencils and markers, and store their pieces on the tops of shelves or in corners for long enough and I hope to do everything in my power to give them the best school experience in my art room.
