My students participated in the One Hour of Code computer coding program last year and were so motivated by the program we continued to implement the lessons within our classroom. I watched students with very little desire to participate in daily lessons and very high absenteeism gain an enthusiasm for not only coming to school, but in being successful in ALL of their classes. On the first few days of school this year they were bursting with excitement wanting to tell me how they had been to the local library over the summer and how many levels and programs they had completed. A genuine excitement about learning and how they will be able to utilize their new knowledge has been ignited. "The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary." ~ Vince Lombardi, one of the most successful NFL coaches in history. My students are a rather diverse group with different backgrounds, home environments, and histories, but one topic they all can relate to is sports and the hard work it takes to become a successful athlete. Many of them do not have computers, internet, cable, satellite tv, or any other form of technology at home which limits their ability to explore the world and its opportunities. With access to adequate "equipment" at school they will be able to reach beyond their current environment and "train" for their future as "All-Star" citizens of their communities and the world. I am hoping to obtain at least 5 Chromebook's to use in my classroom to begin teaching my students the basics of keyboarding and to continue to grow their interest and knowledge in computer coding. We will also use the Scholastic Magazines to further our investigations into the current Science and Social Studies topics.
