In my classroom, I teach reading, writing, and social studies using the balanced literacy approach. I use mentor texts, picture books, and novels during my interactive reading, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading times. I integrate writing and social studies as much as possible. Books can be used to learn new vocabulary words, to improve fluency, listening and reading comprehension skills, and to encourage a love of reading. Many of my students participate in the Bilingual Program. Next school year, it will become a Dual Language class. Most of the instruction will be in Spanish.
