I am entering my second year of teaching in a school in the heart of a low socio-economic area. This year I have a class of 21 students of whom all are on free lunch. Being my first year, my eyes could not believe, and my heart wept at the struggles my students faced on a daily basis. School was their haven of sorts. Several of my students have IEPs but also posses the fire within them to excel. They have truly taught me a great deal about what it takes to meet a child where they are and give them the tools needed to move mountains. Through them I have learned that exposure is so very important. After a field trip to the zoo, I found that many had never been. Swimming for two weeks with my second graders through a district project, was very eye opening. Some had never been in a pool, but yet were mastering the class by the end of the two weeks. Not only did I show up every day to work for them, but they showed up every day to teach me.
