Students are expected to learn so much today and the curriculum is faster paced with high stakes testing at the end of each year. Research has consistently shown strong behavioral and academic benefits of implementing a flexible seating model. Some of the benefits include an increase in motivation & engagement, burning calories & excess energy, improved metabolism, an increase in core body strength, and better oxygen flow to the brain. It is hard to sit still in a hard plastic chair for 6 hours a day. It is the goal of this project to realize the above benefits for the students under my care. This is a pilot program for my school and it is my hope, with your assistance, the results will be consistent with the current research. Every child is different and therefore it is my belief that if the learning environment is altered to meet the child's individual learning style, we will all realize our academic & behavioral goals. The requested products are designed to provide further movement and muscle stimuli while the child is engaged in classroom lessons at their tables. First, the inflatable seat cushion will be used on chairs, stools, or the floor to provide movement in a seated position causing lower body muscle groups to be engaged. These cushions are often referred to as wiggle seats. Next, the Sit 'n' Gym 26 inch ball will be used as a chair. The seated student will need to make frequent adjustments to their position exercising the large muscle groups in their legs and abdomen. Finally, the balance base will be utilized by those students using the standing level desk. The base will allow for changes in foot pressure keeping lower body muscle groups engaged.
